From a galaxy far, far away to a planet where the spice flows, it appears that Oscar Isaac is making an indelible mark in the world of genre. This time, he’s about to inherit abilities from the Egyptian moon god Khonshu for Marvel’s Moon Knight. The actor is in late-stage negotiations to play the lead in the series slated for Disney Plus, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Now, Isaac’s last Marvel role was as the formidable villain in Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse. However, this will be his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. Jeremy Slater has been tapped to develop and lead the writing team for Moon Knight. Slater is best known for adapting The Umbrella Academy for Netflix.

Moon Knight follows Marc Spector, a former boxer/CIA agent-turned-mercenary who was pulled from the brink of death by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. The god offered him a second chance at life under one condition: Spector must become Khonshu’s conduit on Earth. Khonshu imbued Spector with supernatural abilities. Upon his return to the United States, Spector donned the crimefighting moniker “Moon Knight” and battled some baddies.

Additionally, Spector took on multiple personalities so as to extricate himself from his mercenary past, such as millionaire Steven Grant and taxi driver Jake Lockley. The Moon Knight character first appeared in 1975’s Werewolf by Night #32 and was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin.

Marvel’s Moon Knight and Isaac’s involvement mark the latest in Disney Plus’ expansive superhero roster. This news comes hot on the heels of Tatiana Maslany joining She-Hulk as the titular lead role. WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, is set to debut later this year. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki will, presumably, premiere sometime next year.

Oscar Isaac is best known for his starring role as Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars trilogy. He’s also worked in smaller genre projects such as Ex Machina and Annihilation. He can be seen next in Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi epic Dune
