Oscar Isaac is in talks to join the cast of Denis Villeneuve’s remake of Dune.  Isaac joins Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in the latest adaptation Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Isaac will take on the role of Duke Leto Atreides, father to protagonist Paul Atreides, played by Chalamet. Ferguson will play Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica.  The role of Duke Leto is previously played by Jürgen Prochnow in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation.  And William Hurt in the 2000 SYFY mini-series.

Dune tells the story of battle for power of the one element that controls the entire universe, the Spice.  The noble family of House Atreides is sent to the desert planet Arrakis to oversee Spice production. The Emperor Shaddam IV and rival family House Harkonnen betray the Atreides family, destroying their house and leaving them for dead. Paul vows his vengeance and begins a journey where no man has dared to go.

Dune also stars  Stellen Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, and Charlotte Rampling.  Produced by Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers. Villeneuve is directing and co-writing the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

I’m not sure how I feel about Isaac being considered for Duke Leto.  Don’t get me wrong, Isaac is a great and exciting actor. In my honest opinion, he would make a better Duncan Idaho than a Duke Leto. I see the Duke as someone with a little more grandeur.  Not that Isaac can not be more majestic, but I assumed they would cast someone older. We’ll see what happens.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is currently in pre-production.
