Updated on:

Jules, Eleanor, and Kira stand around Xander who faces a metal box mounted on the wall. They are in a run down fishing supply shed. They all wear dark coats and the room is dimly lit on Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 9, "Attracting Awful Things."

No one — except maybe Kira (Keeley Hawes) — on Orphan Black: Echoes is ready to face up to the whole truth. Whether it’s Darros (James Hiroyuki Liao) holding his cards close to prevent anyone from derailing his plans, Eleanor 2.0 (Rya Kihlstetd) being selective about the memories she shares with the other printouts, or Lucy (Krysten Ritter) admitting she may have to choose between her genetic family and her found family, things are ramping up in “Attracting Awful Things” and all the secrets are going to spill and choices will be made.

In 2009, Teenage Eleanor (Amanda Fix) walks slowly down a hall in sock feet. Calling out, “Dad?” she opens the bathroom door and finds bloody water overflowing the curtained tub onto the ground. She picks up the hunting knife from the ground and pulls the curtain. Her father (Rob Torr) lies dying in the tub. She steps back into bloody pools on the ground, staining her socks, and drops the knife. She tells her father she’ll get help, but he shakes his head at her. Crying and shaking, she leaves the bathroom and pulls out her phone. She dials 9-1-1 but doesn’t hit the call button. Instead, sitting down in the hall, she puts in her earbuds and turns on Modest Mouse’s “Novocain Stain.”

Orphan Black: Echoes, “Attracting Awful Things”

In her room at Settlement House, Lucy’s lost in the memory with Jules (Amanda Fix) shouting her name. Craig (Jonathan Whittaker) lies on the floor, shot through the thigh. Xander (Vinson Tran) is sitting on the bed, shocked. He’s dropped the gun but spots the vial of focus drug on the ground. While Lucy and Craig argue about calling an ambulance, Xander grabs the vial off the ground and the security token from Lucy’s coat pocket and runs out the door. Jules follows, telling Lucy what he’s taken.

Outside, Jules finds Xander sitting on wooden pallets, having taken all the focus drug in one go. She searches his pockets for the security token and starts to leave but turns back when he begs her for help. Jules calls Eleanor 2.0 for help. Eleanor is in Kira’s car and tells Jules they’re on their way to help.

Inside, Lucy and Craig try to stop the bleeding. He continues to refuse to let her call an ambulance or take him to a hospital. She helps him to the bed, and he sends her for supplies. As she goes, she grabs her phone and texts Jack (Avan Jogia) to help them.

Help From All Quarters

At Tina’s (Eva Everett Irving) house, Charlie (Zariella Langford-Haughton) rocks back and forth on the couch in the living room. Jack finds her and tries to send her to bed. She questions how they can all leave if Lucy doesn’t have a fake passport like they do. Jack assures her they’ll figure something out. Just then, Lucy’s text comes through. Charlie insists he help Lucy, reminding him that her mom left them because he was never around for her.

At Kira and Eleanor’s house, Jules leaves a message for Lucy, letting her know where she’s at and that they’ve retrieved the security token. Kira and Eleanor come downstairs after tucking Xander into a bed to sleep off the drugs. The three of them discuss what they know about the security token. The front door opens, and Delphine Cormier (Evelyne Brochu) enters.

Tom Can’t Stay Out of the Game

In his apartment, Tom (Reed Diamond) obsesses over his Lucy board. Grabbing a picture of Jack off the board, he starts a deep dive on his laptop to research him.

At the house, Delphine fills Jules in on how she and Kira are related. She checks in on how Eleanor feels and tells her that she’s often reminded Cosima (Tatiana Maslany) that it doesn’t matter how she came to be. “What matters is your passion,” she concludes, “That’s who you are.”

Kira shares with the others that Delphine is an expert in discovering people’s secrets. Delphine suggests they need to follow the money to figure out what Darros is up to. Jules realizes her foster mother Neva (Alex Castillo) can help them.

Craig Opens Up

At Settlement House, Craig confesses to Lucy that when he was younger, he drove the getaway car when he and some friends burned down a corporate office, not realizing anyone was in the building. He’s evaded the warrant out for his arrest ever since.

In his apartment, Tom brokers a ticket transfer for a Holo-Celine Dion concert. On a shelf, there’s a picture of him with the assassin Charlie killed. Nonchalantly, he asks if the other person still has a contact at the Department of Defense. He’s looking for the names of everyone in Jack’s army unit.

Delphine and Kira drive up to Neva’s building. As they wait, Kira wants to know if Cosima’s so mad at her that she refuses to help. Delphine admits Cosima is upset, but that’s not why she didn’t come. Kira worries that what she’s created can’t be reversed now that Darros has it. Delphine suggests she can control or regulate it by finding Darros’s weak spot and exploiting it.

Neva arrives. She tells the others that Darros’s financial filings are kept on paper in the basement. Unfortunately, her access card has been locked out. The security guard, Emmanuel (Fodé Bangoura), comes to the door. Delphine convinces him to let them in.

At the house, Eleanor makes tea for Jules and herself. She adds the serum to her own tea. Jules asks if Lucas (Jaeden Noel) knows that Kira used his blood for the serum. Eleanor says that she’s told him everything. Jules confesses that since meeting Lucy and Eleanor, she finally feels like she belongs. She tells Eleanor that Lucas has a good mom. They hug it out.

Jack to the Rescue

Lucy makes Craig stop drinking whisky. She refuses to leave his side because she believes that, despite what Eleanor told them about the day their father died by suicide, they could’ve done something to save him. She and Jules have always felt that the death was their fault somehow. Craig getting shot triggered the memory for her.

She wonders if she’s the kind of person who could leave someone she loves to die. Craig reassures her that whatever she did in the past, what matters is what she does now. He reminds her that things are complicated and she may have to make a hard choice. Jack arrives.

Following the Money

With Neva buying them thirty minutes alone, Kira and Delphine search Darros’s financials. Delphine finds a real estate purchase from the year before costing $44 billion. Kira looks up the address, 5634 Foster Road, and discovers it’s a tiny piece of coastline.

It’s only an hour away by car, but Delphine tells Kira that she’ll have to go on her own. Delphine is heading home to Cosima. Kira drives to the Foster Road address and finds a rundown fishing shack.

At Settlement House, Jack looks Craig over and doesn’t like his color. Craig and Jack both tell Lucy to leave the room. When Jack lifts the towel, he realizes Craig’s lost too much blood. He’s nicked a vein. Jack tells Craig he needs a blood transfusion. Craig tells him to set it up at Settlement House. It’s his place, and if things go wrong, it’s where he wants to die.

Kira explores the shack and discovers a machine with the Darros Foundation star logo on it. It’s scrolling the images on the security token. There’s a spot on it where the token fits. Looking out the window to the water, Kira sees several underwater server capsules. She places the token in the machine, which triggers a scanner ring to lower from the ceiling. The machine deems her thought pattern incorrect. A 30-minute countdown begins while the machine informs her she has two more attempts.

Their Own Darros

She calls Eleanor and Jules and tells them about the underwater server farm. Realizing the access terminal is tailored for Darros’s thought patterns, Jules goes upstairs to get Xander. He’s awake but resistant because the memories he’s relived have revealed that Darros is terrible.

At Settlement House, Jack sets Lucy up to transfuse blood into Craig. She tells Craig she’s not ready to lose him. He shares that although he never had a family, he is as proud of her as if she were his family.

Eleanor, Jules, and Xander arrive at the shack, and Kira instructs Xander to look at the star symbol and let his mind go where it will. Xander stares at the star and flashes to a hospital bed where a Darros printout lies motionless but alive. Josh (Izad Etemadi) explains to Darros that there was a calibration glitch, and the skull didn’t fully close. Darros asks if the calibration can be fixed. Josh says he can but points out that if the printout isn’t taken to a hospital immediately, he’ll die.

Darros decides to let the printout die. He takes a star pendant necklace out of his pocket and hangs it around the printout’s neck. He leans in and whispers to the printout, “You don’t know how hard it is to be the strong one. One who survives.”

In the shack, the terminal greets Xander as Mr. Darros and grants them access. Xander stumbles and tells them a little about what he saw. Jules helps him outside while Eleanor and Kira open the database and discover it contains the medical records and scans of everyone in the country.

Tom’s Move

At Tina’s house, she wakes up, realizing someone’s in her house. She leaves Charlie sleeping and slips down to the living room, where she finds Tom in a containment suit going through Lucy’s papers. She attacks him and has the upper hand in the fight until he stabs her with a hypodermic needle. Before she passes out, he asks her where Lucy is, telling her he wants to find Lucy because she’s not human, killed a friend of his, and put him in his boss’s bad books. Tina’s last words before passing out are, “Go to hell.” Tom turns around and finds Charlie in the doorway.

In the shack, Kira and Eleanor discover that Darros recently accessed twelve full-body scans, but the names are encrypted. With the push of a button, Kira prints one of the scans to a data stick. At Settlement House, Craig is resting more comfortably. Jack says he’s doing better. His phone rings, and it’s Tina. Tom’s taken Charlie.
