Darros Industries may have been able to quietly pursue the runaway print-out Lucy (Krysten Ritter) for the last two years but now that she’s met Jules (Amanda Fix) and told her everything, things are going off the rails rapidly on Orphan Black: Echoes

In a subtle parallel to the series premiere, “Pegasus Girl” opens with a flashback to a year ago and Jules waking up in a hospital room. Although the feel is similar, the surroundings are not. There are no caged birds or homey worn-in couches, and no Kira (Keeley Hawes) sitting nearby, asking questions.

Dr. Teller leans her face on her left hand, gazing intently at her companion. She wears an off-white blouse with a green leaf-like print on it.

Orphan Black: Echoes’s “Pegasus Girl”

Jules undoes an arm cuff which is quickly reattached by a vigilant nurse. The nurse informs her she’s been in a coma for several weeks and was just transferred to this facility the day before. The nurse leaves the room. Jules reaches behind her ear and scrapes some bright pink residue off her skin. She has a faint memory of pink liquid and passes out.

The facility is Beacon Bayview Medical as the screensaver on the “window” in the room advertises. Dr. Pam Teller (Marnie McPhail) enters and introduces herself. She is Jules’s neuropsychologist. She tells Jules that her parents died in the car accident that took Jules’s memories.

Over time, Jules learns the facts of her past from Pam and is able to recall them when asked. She tells Pam that she wants to go home but there’s no home to go to.

Payton (Tehya Silbermann), a classmate, visits Jules in the hospital. Her chatter is inane and meaningless to Jules, who can’t wait for her to leave. Pam arrives and invites Payton to stay for Jules’s session, but Jules insists that they do it without her. Payton leaves after exchanging a meaningful glance with Pam.

A New Life

Later, Jules excitedly shares with Pam that she had a genuine memory of walking her dog. Pam encourages her to keep hoping that her memories will return. She also shares that Jules’s foster family will be picking her up in a week. Jules is taken aback by the news.

On the day of the pick-up, Pam takes the picture Lucy will find framed in Neva’s (Alex Castillo) office. Jules gives Pam a hug goodbye. Pam reminds her they’ll see each other soon as Jules has rehab on Monday.

At her foster family’s home, Neva and Wes (Liam Diaz) show Jules her new bedroom and ensuite. Left alone, Jules lies down on her bed and the scene segues to the present day. The walls still haven’t been painted but now there’s evidence of Jules having made herself at home.

Wes drops a bag of snacks on her and checks in to see if she’s feeling okay after being abducted the day before. Jules assures him she’s fine. Before leaving, she picks up a pink journal covered in stickers. Inside is a copy of the photo Pam took on the day they picked her up from the hospital.

Wes holds a smoothie shake bottle in his right hand as he gets his backpack on. Jules faces him, turned away from the camera. They both wear school uniforms with burgundy sweater vests over white shirts. There are color swatches painted on the wall.

Beacon Bayview Medical

Lucy and Jack (Avan Jogia) walk outside Beacon Bayview Medical. Lucy asks if Charlie (Zariella Langford-Haughton) is okay without him. He says that Tina (Eva Everett Irving) is taking care of her. They head inside.

At Tina’s house, Charlie finds her gun drawer. Tina finds her looking at the guns and gets her attention, suggesting they go out for a bit.

Kira sits on a bench outside, wringing her hands a bit, waiting for Josh (Izad Etemadi) who brings some drinks over. After he shares about his life stressors, Kira asks him about the calibration error potential of the machine. He’s certain the calibration was near perfect. Kira tells him about the Foundation’s concern that Lucy is dangerous. He insists that although the scan wasn’t able to replicate memories, her brain is an exact match.

Josh suggests that Kira’s not as concerned about potential flaws in printing out Lucy, rather she’s questioning whether they should’ve done it at all. Kira admits she’s worried about Lucy being out in the world without memories or supports. She reminds Josh that he can always return to work with her if he wants to. She shares that she’s considering retiring which shocks him.

Pushing for Answers

The nurse at the desk of Beacon Bayview tells Lucy she cannot give out private patient information. Lucy works around the truth, trying to get any information at all. While she’s talking, Jules’s nurse overhears. The nurse at the counter tells her she needs to leave before she calls security. Jack comes in and provides an out for Lucy.

As they leave, Jules’s nurse approaches them and tells them about Dr. Teller and how Jules had nightmares about blood. The nurse leaves and Lucy tells Jack that she thinks she’s been having the same nightmare as Jules.

At school, Jules and her desk partner are preparing for a lab experiment. The other girl tells Jules she has a test coming up and would like to make a purchase if Jules has made a new batch. Jules says no purchase is necessary; she’ll give her a friend’s discount. The girl tells her that the last time she used Jules’s product in excess, her dreams started playing out on the bus the next day.

Jules watches the flask bubble and has a flash of memory of the pink fluid again. Coming out of it, she passes some product to the girl. The teacher looks over and tells her she’s wanted in the principal’s office. Her lab partner apologizes.

“I Have Permission to Change”

In the office, Jules is waiting alone when Pam arrives. She asks Jules why she didn’t come to school the day before. Jules comments that she didn’t realize she was being watched so closely. Pam can’t get her to open up and lets her go back to class. Before she leaves, she asks Pam who sent up the things from Florida. She tells Pam the entries in the journal don’t sound anything like her. Pam tells her that brain injuries can change personalities as much as personal habits.

A police officer attends the scene. Tina tries to explain the behavior. Charlie signs that she needs to be put away. When the officer doesn’t understand, she uses her phone to tell him she killed someone. Tina makes up a story about a recently deceased hamster.

The officer asks Tina for identification. Seeing her military ID, he softens a bit and lets them go. Tina scolds Charlie that that wasn’t cool. Charlie rolls her eyes at that and walks away.

In the Room Where It Happens

At Paul Darros’s (James Hiroyuki Liao) home, Tom (Reed Diamond) and Emily (Tattiawna Jones) watch the footage of Lucy entering Neva’s office building. Emily questions some of the conclusions Tom is drawing from what they know. She suggests that they may not need lethal force if Lucy isn’t actually dangerous. Tom thanks her for her contributions but dismisses her concerns.

Wes and Jules sit on a bed. Wes sits further back, near the pillows, wearing a green zip-up hoodie open at the front over a floral print shirt and blue t-shirt. Jules wears a black denim jacket and is intently reading a pink book covered in stickers. Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 3

At home, Jules asks Wes to read her journal. He reads a passage out loud about a dream where she flies away on wings that sprout from her back. Jules searches the phrase online and finds out it’s from a book called Pegasus Girl, a self-published fantasy novel. The author, David Stanley Fagerland (Duane Murray), lives in Boston. She decides to track him down. Wes isn’t enthused about the idea.

Kira meets with Darros at his home. Tom and Emily are present as well. Kira explains that she’s reviewed all the data about the printing, and there is nothing to suggest that Lucy is wrong or dangerous. She demands that Darros assure her that he won’t hurt her. Darros acts insulted at the idea. Kira notices Emily fidgeting with an elastic band. His repeated assurances ring hollow.

Charlie’s Truth

At Tina’s, Jack asks Tina about what happened with the officer while Charlie sits on the floor in the living room. While they continue to discuss the situation, Lucy goes to Charlie and signs that Charlie should talk to her about what’s happened.

Charlie tells her that she’s in trouble. Lucy reminds her that she shot him to protect Lucy. Charlie is upset that they left the man lying on the ground like he didn’t exist. She gets upset and runs upstairs, crying.

Jules and Wes arrive at Fagerland’s house. A man wearing a white helmet glowing with orange light opens the door. Sitting down with him, Jules opens the conversation by quoting the line from Pegasus Girl at him. He thinks they’re fans of his books until Jules drops the journal on the table. Fagerland immediately panics, pleading with her not to tell “them” that he reused the line in his book.

She demands to know if he wrote the journal. He’s still panicking and tells her he believes “they” are still watching him. Jules gets louder, asking who hired Fagerland. Wes steps in and tells her they should go now.
