ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING: 5 Questions We Need Answered in Season 4

Charles, Oliver, Loretta, Kimber and the cast of Death Rattle Dazzle pose onstage at the end of their opening number in Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 10, "Opening Night."

Only Murders in the Building wrapped its third season today with two killers in handcuffs and a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. Thankfully, the series will return for Season 4. So, we’ll see a concrete resolution and these new narrative threads tied in a fun storytelling bow (well, hopefully).

Charles’ stunt double dead on his floor and an assassin potentially situated inside the Arconia leaves us with questions to mull over until Season 4 premieres. Read on for our five burning queries, Arconiacs.

Will Part of Season 4 Take Place in LA?

Tobert (Jesse Williams) tells Mabel (Selena Gomez) he’s accepted a job working on an indie flick in LA. Then, at the Death Rattle Dazzle after-party, Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) informs Loretta (Meryl Streep) about various job opportunities in the City of Angeles, including a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off. (How funny would it be if Jesse Williams appeared in said fictional spin-off as himself?)

Mabel and Oliver (Martin Short) support their partners, claiming they’ll visit LA despite only having the tolerance to take the city in “small doses.” This begs the question: will part of the season find our sleuthing trio in Los Angeles for a spell? It could be fun to find Charles (Steve Martin) sniffing out his old Hollywood buds for the murder investigation. It’s also an excuse for Streep, Williams and Andrea Martin to return. The latter’s character, Joy, could be spending time with her new boyfriend, Scott Bakula. Bring in Bakula, you cowards!

Was the Killer Targeting Charles or Sazz?

While it’s safe to assume the killer attempted to murder Charles, it might be worth considering that Sazz (Jane Lynch) is the genuine target. Maybe Sazz had some enemies. Let’s consider all the angles here, folks. Also, Sazz didn’t get to discuss that “sensitive matter” with Charles. What if it’s related to her death? Of course, it would be easy to mistake Sazz for Charles, so the first point is more likely. That said, it would raise the narrative stakes if one of our main characters is at the center of a murder plot.

What Was Sazz Writing on the Floor?

In the final moments of “Opening Night,” Sazz is seen trying to write a message in her blood. However, we hear what could be her last, rattle-like breath before she dies. (Death Rattle Dazzle for real.) We only see one streak of blood. Perhaps she was writing something for Charles? If so, could it be related to what she wanted to tell him earlier?

I think she knew someone was after Charles. This is Sazz we’re talking about — she knows everything about the man for whom she stunt doubles. She even knows what clothes he’s wearing in his day-to-day. I like the idea of her attempting to warn Charles about this mystery killer. If she didn’t already know this person’s identity, I can picture her whipping out a murder board of her own and formulating ideas from there.

Will the Police Consider Charles a Suspect?

At face value, it certainly looks suspicious that a dead woman is on Charles’ apartment floor. Considering how much the police have bungled past investigations in this show, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for them to jump to conclusions at the get-go. Perhaps they’ll consider Charles as a suspect in Sazz’s murder. That said, I can see Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) not falling for that, considering her history with our podcasting besties.

Will We Spend More Time in the Building?

Since Sazz’s murder occurred in the Arconia, methinks we’ll spend more time in “the building” in Season 4. Finally! Part of what Season 3 was missing was the charming Arconia residents. They’re such delightful supporting players. The Arconia is also a character, in a way, and a pivotal one when considering the podcast’s name. I hope this also means the crew will devote more time to the podcast.

Perhaps we’ll see the return of the Arconiacs, too. As much as I loved the musical aspect of Season 3, I want to revisit the eccentric cast of characters surrounding the Arconia that made the first two seasons a damn treat. Maybe throw in another Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) cameo for good measure.
