The Wheel of Time, Amazon Prime Video’s epic fantasy series, just dropped an incredible trailer. This is the first official trailer and it perfectly sets up the conflict in this impressive saga – In the battle against the Dark One, there is only one that can win the fight. Who is that one?
With Lorne Balfe’s beautiful score playing in the background, the first official trailer is chock full of characters and locations that we have not seen. These new scenes show the complexity and enormity of the story and will have readers of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time book series very excited.
The trailer is mostly from Moiraine’s (Rosamund Pike) perspective which tracks since Moiraine is the one leading the quest to find the one person who can face the Dark One. Here’s a spoiler-free breakdown of the trailer:
First, we see Moiraine being raised to an Aes Sedai. She holds the Oath Rod and swears her three oaths, “I swear to speak no word that isn’t true. To make no weapon which one person can kill another and never to use the one power as a weapon.” Once taking these oaths, an Aes Sedai literally cannot do anything of these things. The One Power will stop them. One may think this makes all Aes Sedai safe and honest. That isn’t entirely true. They’ve had centuries to find workarounds to these oaths.
According to the descriptive text Wheel of Time’s Twitter Account released with the trailer, we get our first good look at Thom Merrilin (Alexandre Willaume), the Gleeman. He’s a traveling storyteller/bard that gets swept up in the events of the story. However, the actor looks a heck of a lot like Peter Franzen who plays Stepin, a warder in the series. (Thanks to a FB reader who pointed this out to us in our comments section). Whether it’s Thom or Stepin, we hear the person telling someone that the term Aes Sedai means “Servants of All” in the old tongue. We also see the stunning Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo) who is the leader of all Aes Sedai. She is called the Amyrlin Seat.
We hear Moiraine say that she must follow this path as she and Lan head to the Two Rivers where the “Old Blood runs deep.” This is a phrase used many times in the book series. This is where we find our five young heroes, Rand (Josha Stradowski), Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Nynaeve (Zoe Robin), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) and Mat (Barney Harris). We see the beautiful countryside then we see a dark figure on a horse. It’s a Myddraal, a shadowspawn. Nothing good happens when they show up.
We see our heroes atop horses riding into an abandoned city. The ancient fallen city is called Shadar Logoth which means “The shadow is waiting.” So, you know, not a good place to be. We see Nyneave whipping her braid over her shoulder which is a running action in the book series. When a woman has a braid in the Two Rivers that means she’s an adult. Nynaeve famously tugs and whips her braid around. We also see Mat draw a dagger. That dagger is also an important part of the plot but no spoilers here.
Moiraine tells the five young, skeptical and frightened young Emond’s Fielders that “The Dark One is waking. But there will one who can stand against him and it’s one of the five of you.” She then says, “Your life isn’t going to be what you thought.” Cut to brooding teenagers.
Then we see a sequence with Lan (Daniel Henney), Thom, Moiraine and the group fighting more shadowspawn, this time trollocs. The quick-cut scenes are action-packed and quite scary.
The next scene takes us to Fal Dara. This city sits near the border of The Blight, an evil place. Fal Dara is considered a final defense against the forces of evil and shadowspawn. Because of this, there are many warriors in Fal Dara. These warriors are known for their “topknot” hairstyle – this little fact was exciting to see realized in the trailer.
Then there is a good look at a Whitecloak. A Whiteclock is a slang term to describe members of The Children of the Light. This fanatical group is an independent army of what can best be described as religious zealots prone to violence.
The rest of the trailer contains quick cuts. We see battles with trollocs, the main group arriving at a Waygate, Logain (Alvaro Morte), the self-proclaimed Dragon Reborn weaving his tainted magic and Fal Daran warriors in action.
We also see Aiel warriors and an Aiel Maiden of the Spear. The Aiel are a formidable race of people that live in a desert region called the Aiel Waste. I believe what we see in the trailer is a flashback from a big battle on Dragonmount during the Aiel War. Once again, spoilers, so I won’t say any more about that.
The trailer ends as it began, with Moiraine’s ceremony as we hear, “The Wheel weaves what the Wheel wills.” I have that on a t-shirt. True story.
Check out the trailer below. The Wheel of Time premieres on November 19th on Amazon Prime.
The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan‘s fantasy series spanning 14 books. The final three books in the series were written by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s passing. It is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the “Aes Sedai” as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine is interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it.
Executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins adapted the novels for television. Executive producers also include Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, Darren Lemke, Marigo Kehoe and Uta Briesewitz. Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal and Sanderson will serve as consulting producers.
