On Saturday, October 8 2022 at 4:00 PM ET on the Empire Stage, the Star Trek Universe panel beamed into New York Comic Con 2022! Like the Star Trek Universe panel at SDCC 2022 in July, the panel was segmented so that three of the currently ongoing Trek shows could each enjoy their own “mini-panel.” The featured shows were Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 part 2, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and Star Trek: Picard season 3. The panel was moderated by Josh Horowitz (MTV News), and Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman and Rod Roddenberry served as panelists for all segments.

Star Trek Universe panel: Discovery

Representing the upcoming fifth season of Discovery was the show’s star, Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), who appeared virtually from the set. In-person panelists included actors Wilson Cruz (Doctor Hugh Culber) and Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets) as well as showrunner Michelle Paradise

After Martin-Green introduced a clip, Paradise introduced the new additions to the cast. Callum Keith Rennie will appear as Captain Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L’ak, and Eve Harlow as Moll.

While L’ak and Moll are described as a “Bonnie and Clyde” pair who will cause problems for Burnham, Paradise says Rayner needs to “learn some lessons,” noting that he will learn them. Cruz and Martin-Green agreed that this is the best season of Discovery yet.

During the Q&A, the panelists were asked if a Discovery musical episode can be expected. “Anything’s possible,” answered Kurtzman.

Prodigy

Present at NYCC 2022 for Prodigy were actors Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Janeway/Vice Admiral Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal R’El) and Jameela Jamil (Ensign Ascencia). They were joined by co-executive producer and director Ben Hibon and executive producers and creators Kevin and Dan Hageman.

To kick off the segment, the Hageman brothers introduced a Prodigy season 1 midseason trailer. They also revealed a legacy Trek character who will be appearing in the coming half-season: Admiral Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox).

“The show is beautifully written and animated, which means the creators are really taking the fans into consideration,” said Jamil during the segment. “I’m really proud to be apart of this show.”

During the Q&A for this portion of the Star Trek Universe panel, Kurtzman was asked if Janeway would return in live action. While he did not commit to one answer or another, he teased that machinations “may” be in motion.
