Yesterday during NYCC 2022, the cast of His Dark Materials took to the stage to chat about the third and final season. This season is based on Philip Pullman‘s novel, The Amber Spyglass, the final chapter in this epic fantasy series. It is produced by Bad Wolf alongside New Line Cinema for BBC One and HBO Max. The teaser trailer was shown during the panel but wasn’t officially released to the public until this morning. It didn’t just get us excited but also confirmed the return of a beloved character through a quick glimpse at the end.
The His Dark Materials teaser trailer heavily spotlights Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), who is currently building an army that includes witches and rebel angels to take down the Authority. We also see Serafina (Ruta Gedmintas) and a new character in the series named Commander Ogunwe (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). There is a heavy emphasis on the rebellion, but we still get glimpses of other stories that will take place during season three.

Within the teaser, we see Lyra (Dafne Keen), now the prophesied Eve child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of the Subtle Knife, traveling to the Land of the Dead. The location was teased during a season two post-credits scene attached to the finale. The His Dark Materials teaser expands on the alternate dimension by showing off other residents and the harpies that guard the realm.
It is here that fans got a big surprise. As the teaser comes to a close, we see Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda), who died during the events of season two, turn and talk with Lyra. We aren’t sure exactly how their entire conversation will go, but we do hear him state, “Well, I’ll be damned.” We aren’t sure just got much of season three Miranda will take part in, but with the Land of the Dead being a significant location point, we are hopeful that he is in for the long haul.
