Beltalowda! NYCC 2020 just got epic! The cast and creators of Amazon Prime’s The Expanse dropped by NYCC 2020 on Thursday to deliver exclusive info behind Season Five, the mind-boggling first official trailer and a premiere date. Yes, you read that correctly. We’ve got a premiere date for Season Five!

Dominique Tipper (Naomi Nagata) was our effervescent moderator for the panel. Showrunner Naren Shankar also joined the fun alongside co-authors Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, who both write the novels under the pseudonym James S.A. Corey. Cast members Steven Strait (James Holden), Wes Chatham (Amos Burton), Cara Gee (Camina Drummer), Frankie Adams (Roberta Draper), and Shohreh Aghdashloo (Chrisjen Avasarala) also joined the fray.

Now, Tipper commenced the panel by posing questions for the writers room. How did they approach writing Season Five? Shankar revealed that “you reap what you sow” is always an angle they pursue for each season. Tipper joked that perhaps Franck and Abraham are prophets, as it appears The Expanse has prophesized certain social events into fruition in the real world. Science fiction does hold up a mirror to society, and The Expanse has always been that crystal clear mirror.

Additionally, Tipper had each cast member explain where their respective characters were in Season Four and where they were heading in Season Five. Chatham revealed that Amos has personal business to take care of … on Earth. Hopefully that means more Amos backstory! Tipper also divulged that Naomi will be on the hunt for her son, especially since there will be a bounty on Marco Inaros’ head.

Holden will still be enveloped in what exactly slaughtered the protomolecule builders all those years ago. Avasarala will also be dealing with the repercussions of losing the election and her husband in one fell swoop. Adams revealed that Draper will be embarking on a mission to discover who was behind the terrorist attack on Mars. Of course, Drummer may be on the warpath after Ashford’s murder last season.

The panel also dropped a heaping helping of Season Five trailer into the audience’s collective lap. And boy, did it not disappoint! Shankar described the upcoming fifth season as more epic and more personal than previous installments.

You can check out the trailer below for yourselves. The Expanse Season Five will fly into Amazon Prime on Wednesday, December 16. The first three episodes will be available to stream followed by week-to-week releases.
