Fresh off of the switch from Syfy to Amazon and some serious buzz at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, The Expanse came out swinging at NYCC this weekend.  They started the panel with a screening of their season four premiere, gave all of us at home a killer teaser, and confirmed that this season will be all about the very complicated issue of colonization.

The crew of the Rocinante has been sent on a UN mission to explore new planets beyond the Ring Gate in season four.  They’ll come up against unforeseen dangers and moral questions that arise from conquest.  The cast chimed in on the right and wrong ways to take on new lands.  Cara Gee (Camina) said “I’m an indigenous woman, so for me of course I’m going to look at Belter issues from that perspective. That’s part of what makes this story so special.” And, Stephen Strait made the point that sci-fi, at it’s best, is allegory.  It gives us an opportunity to explore our world through the stories of others’.  We couldn’t agree more.

Check out the teaser below.  It borrows JFK’s famous “moon” speech and it is absolutely stunning.  We are so excited about season four!

The Expanse begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets, which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources, but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. While Earthers, Martians, and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and use its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.

The Expanse premieres on Amazon December 13th.
