Fans who were able to sit in on the Mortal Engines panel at NYCC 2018 got a big surprise. Not only did they get a new trailer but fans there were able to see the first 25 minutes of the film! I’m not sad about not being able to go to the con this year, not at all. So the fans at home were able to see this new trailer that gives us a better look at the story they’re going to be telling based off the Philip Reeve novel.

Hester Shaw’s (Hera Hilmar) mother loved exploring the Old World, digging up artifacts and tools. She was close with Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving) until she discovered something very, very powerful. So powerful that he killed her for it. He was going to do the same to Hester, but she was able to get away. From then on, Hester made it her mission to kill Valentine. But she’s not alone. A mysterious pilot Anna Fang (Jihae) was tasked with helping Hester by her mother, should anything happen to her. Now with some friends on her side, she may be able to complete her goal and stop him. But with a Stalker on their tail, things may get a lot more difficult.

The trailer is really good. They’re doubling down on Hester being the focus, even though in the books Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) and Hester were equal parts in the story. The film just looks good. I’m looking forward to seeing just how big they’re going to make this world. It seems huge in the books, so I imagine it’s going to be even bigger in the film. I’m also hoping we’re still going to explore the London subplot. No spoilers from me but it’s an interesting part of the story. Also Grike’s here!! I’m excited to see the Stalker being included in the promotional material. He’s such a scary presence, even though he wasn’t in it for very long in the books.
