The series, created by Felix Barrett and Dennis Kelly, is a six-episode limited series event and will be split into three-episode stories. According to HBO, the first three episodes, “Summer,” follow Sam (Jude Law), a man who is drawn to a mysterious island off the British coast where he encounters a group of islanders set on preserving their traditions at any cost. Isolated from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave the idyllic and dangerously enchanting world he has discovered, where the secretive rituals of its inhabitants bring him to grapple with experiences of loss and trauma hidden in his past through the distorted lens of the present. As boundaries between fantasy and reality fragment, his quest to unlock the truth leads the islanders to reveal a shocking secret.
The last three episodes, “Winter,” follow Helen (Naomie Harris), a strong-willed outsider who comes to the island seeking answers, but whose arrival precipitates a fractious battle to decide its fate as the lines between fantasy and fact are distorted
The top of the trailer goes immediately to shiver-town. We hear innkeeper Mrs. Martin, (Emily Watson) say to Sam, “Pain doesn’t know time here.” Then she says, “Most people are scared of pain, but they don’t know how warm it can be.” Okaaaaaay.
Helen arrives at the island telling her daughters, “We’re going to have an adventure!” When she confides in Mr. Martin (Paddy Considine) that she’s had a tough year he replies, “You’re in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time.” Um, run Helen!
Alas, any running is going to be too late. Check out the intense trailer below and watch their descent into fear and pain. The series premieres on HBO, September 14th.
