Nosferatu for a New Age
Death lurks in the darkness … and invites us to succumb to it. Focus Features has blessed us with the first official trailer for Nosferatu, a gorgeously shot Gothic film from Robert Eggers (The Northman, The Lighthouse).
Here’s a brief synopsis per Focus Features:
“Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
The Trailer
In the trailer, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), the aforementioned haunted young woman, describes her affliction to Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz (Willem Dafoe). We learn she’s endured “spells” since childhood.

Ellen tells the professor about her wedding day. We see Ellen and her husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), dancing before they kiss. Another shot shows Ellen laughing with friends, including Anna Harding (Emma Corrin). Ellen explains that when she turns around, everyone is dead. “Standing before me was death … but I’d never been so happy,” Ellen vehemently says as Thomas observes her, looking horrified by her confession.
Then, we hear more about this “creature,” an all-powerful, omnipotent being of unadulterated evil. Villagers assemble to hunt it down. The professor reveals that its sole purpose is to consume all life on Earth. He believes Ellen can redeem them. The trailer sprinkles shadows of said creature (Bill Skarsgård) throughout, but we don’t actually see it.

The Cast and Crew
Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe. Robert Eggers directs from his own script.
I had chills while watching this trailer. The visuals are spine-tinglingly macabre and darkly beautiful. We sorely need a Gothic horror resurgence, so here’s hoping Eggers’ film flings the doors wide open for that.
Nosferatu ominously creeps into theaters on Christmas Day. Before you go, check out the official trailer below.
Will you make the trek to the theaters on December 25? What do you hope to see in Nosferatu? Sound off in the comments.
