Noa DiBerto’s star is on the rise. The multi-talented actor, model and athlete is set to take theaters by storm this May as Rachel in Backspot, her breakout role.

Produced by Elliot PageBackspot made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. It tells the story of young queer cheerleader Riley (Devery Jacobs), the formidable “backspot” on her mid-level cheerleading squad. Her story takes a turn when coach Eileen McNamara (Evan Rachel Wood) gives her the opportunity to join the Thunderhawks. Noa joins Jacobs and Wood as Rachel, Riley’s friend who also joins this all-star team.

Recently, I had the privilege of chatting with Noa about her character in Backspot, what audiences can expect, its accurate depiction of the cheerleading world and more.

The Origin Story

Melody McCune: We at GGA love a good origin story. What’s your origin story? How did you get into acting?

Noa DiBerto: I have been doing gymnastics since I was 18 months old. Gymnastics has taught me many life skills, especially resilience, that set me up for success in the acting world. I have also played soccer my whole life. This taught me the importance of teamwork.

The spark and passion for acting was within me when I took my first steps. I was always fascinated with starring in videos from family and friends, which led to my passion for performance.

Education

In elementary school, I began fitness modeling, an experience that sparked a deep appreciation for the art of photo shoots and visual storytelling through campaigns. My mother (a former television actor) was a positive role model for me.

My active involvement in drama club from first through eighth grade laid a solid foundation for my future in acting. Throughout high school, I participated in drama classes and every theatrical performance from ninth to 12th grade.

From 2015 to 2017, I participated in acting camps with Kids TV International, where I collaborated on writing, directing and starring in our productions. In 2017, I trained with Kamera Kids Talent, focusing on essential acting techniques for television, film, commercials, improvisation and auditions. Then, in 2021, I pursued personalized training at Armstrong Acting Studios in Toronto.

I love to sing and pursued vocal training in 2018-2019 with Aria School of Music, Nobleton. As I entered my early teens, I sought representation from prominent agents in Toronto, ultimately signing with Carrier Talent Management.

A pivotal moment came in 2021 when I secured the lead role as Ella Hopper in Olympians at Heart. I consider myself fortunate that my journey into professional acting began with an audition for a feature film role during my first years.

MM: Let’s talk about Backspot. Can you tell me what it’s about and how you got involved with the project?

ND: Backspot emphasizes breaking stereotypes and showing the real essence of cheerleading. It highlights that cheerleading isn’t just about pom-poms and bubbly girls; it’s demanding and requires dedication. The movie beautifully captures the thrill of being accepted into a new team and its challenges. It teaches valuable lessons such as resilience and teamwork.

Produced by Elliot Page, it’s been an amazing journey collaborating with talented co-stars like Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood. Premiering at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, the story revolves around Rachel (my character), Riley and Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), who are selected for the all-star Thunderhawks team.

Initially exciting, their journey unfolds with unexpected twists, echoing the unpredictable nature of new opportunities in life. Each character brings something unique, offering lessons to be learned or moments to resonate with.

Auditioning and Clicking With the Script

I was drawn to the role because it felt like a mirror image of myself—I loved the humor written into the character and how much it resonated with me. Putting my own spin on my audition, I poured my personality into it. Later, at the callback, I instantly clicked with D.W. Waterson, our director, and the rest of the team.

Being a cheerleader on the Western University Varsity Coed Cheerleading team, the role felt like a natural fit for me. I appreciated the opportunity to portray the reality of cheerleading authentically—the hard work, dedication and emotions—on screen. With my connection to cheerleading and a deep resonance with the script and storyline, I knew this role was meant for me. I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to bring this character to life and be part of such an amazing project.

Rachel

MM: How does your character, Rachel, fit into the story?

ND: Rachel is a comical and uplifting character who brings joy and support to her friends. As a spirited cheerleader with a background in gymnastics, Rachel’s athleticism and resilience shine through as she navigates the competitive cheer world. Rachel’s journey is a rollercoaster of emotions, showcasing the depth of her character.

From moments of exuberance to instances where she grapples with inner struggles, Rachel’s complexity reflects the reality of human nature. She highlights the importance of reaching out for support when needed, even though she’s seen as an upbeat, happy friend. As part of what we call “the tripod” alongside Amanda and Riley, Rachel plays an integral role in our collective experiences.

Together, we navigate challenges, including our pursuit to join the Thunderhawks team. Amid the adventures, I strive to portray Rachel as a loyal and empathetic friend, always ready to lend an ear and offer a helping hand. Rachel adds depth and warmth to the story, providing moments of comedy and thoughtful reflections. I’m excited for audiences to connect with her and uncover the layers of her character, finding resonance in her journey of friendship, resilience and self-discovery.

Viewer Expectations

MM: What can viewers expect when they watch this film?

ND: Viewers can expect to enter this movie with a certain idea of cheerleading and leave with a new understanding of the sport’s true essence.

Despite the prevalent stereotypes surrounding cheerleading, this movie illuminates the strength, determination and teamwork required, offering viewers a fresh perspective. The film also covers mental health. It highlights the reality that accompanies significant life transitions, such as ascending to a higher echelon in one’s career or making it onto the prestigious Thunderhawks team.

The movie candidly explores the complexities of anxiety and stress through nuanced storytelling and performances, allowing viewers to empathize with the characters’ struggles. By capturing the raw emotions of anxiety attacks and stress, the film invites viewers to step into the shoes of each character, challenging stereotypes.

It is a powerful reminder not to judge a sport or individual solely based on superficial perceptions. The narrative prompts viewers to re-evaluate their assumptions about those who seemingly exude happiness, emphasizing the importance of checking in on loved ones who may be silently struggling.

MM: Describe Backspot using three words.

ND: Resilience. Overturning assumptions. Determination.

Favorite Scene

MM: Do you have a favorite scene or a highlight from working on this movie?

ND: One of my favorite scenes is an emotional and painful scene with Evan Rachel Wood. It is exciting to watch our characters develop, and our relationships develop together.

It’s a scene that demonstrates the hardships of sports and cheerleading, which I love because I experienced those hardships daily at cheerleading practice. I’m so grateful that there is now a movie that showcases these struggles and diminishes stereotypes.

After this scene, my director, D.W. Waterson, told me we would not need to do it again because it was perfect. This added another layer of memorability because I was surrounded by talented actors like Wendy Crewson, Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood. Considering I am a newer actor, hearing that I’m doing a good job and did this powerful and challenging scene in one take was an accomplishment.

The Acting Process

MM: What’s your favorite part of the acting process?

ND: It is challenging to single out a favorite aspect of acting when I genuinely cherish every part of the process. Whether it’s the exhilaration of preparing to inhabit a character and recording an audition, the thrill of progressing to the next round of callbacks or the joy of receiving the call confirming I have landed the role, each phase holds a special place in my heart.

Getting to Know People

However, getting to know the actors and crew members I’ll be collaborating with is one of the most heartwarming aspects of being on set. It’s like forming a family where everyone brings unique experiences and wisdom to the table. From the talented actors to the dedicated director to the skilled makeup and hair stylists, each person I meet adds something special to the mix. The love, advice and exchange of experiences connect us.

The film industry feels like a warm and inviting community, and the excitement of meeting new people on set never fades. Acting isn’t just a job for me—it’s my top priority in life. Being on set every day fills me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment I can’t find anywhere else. Nothing else I’ve been a part of has brought me the same level of joy and fulfillment as acting, and I’m reminded of that every day.

Embracing Different Characters

I also love stepping into different characters. We’re often stuck being ourselves in our lives, with our likes and dislikes set in stone. But with acting, there are no boundaries. You can become anyone and do anything. It’s like unlocking a door to a whole new world of possibilities. Feeling a character’s emotions, whether happiness, sadness, strength or vulnerability, is truly magical. Each scene teaches me something new about myself and the character I’m portraying. And the best part? I get to share these experiences with the audience.

I’m grateful for every moment I spend pursuing my dreams in this amazing industry. That’s what I love most about acting—it’s not just about pretending; it’s about discovering new parts of myself and sharing them with the world.

MM: What else is on the horizon for you, career-wise?

I am also thrilled to have been selected as a candidate for the Ms. Health and Fitness cover shoot for the Muscle and Fitness HERS Magazine cover, reflecting my commitment to health and fitness.

MM: Have you watched anything interesting lately?

ND: I’m finally watching Friends from beginning to end. I also recently watched Saltburn, a very interesting and mind-twisting movie that makes you think and leaves you in shock.

MM: Name your top five favorite films.

ND: Run, Despicable MeThe NotebookMean GirlsGrease.
