Nintendo Apple

File this under something I never thought I would see, Nintendo is coming to Apple.

During the Apple Event today, Shigeru Miyamoto took to the stage to announce a partnership between Apple and Nintendo in the form of Super Mario Run, a brand new game developed exclusively for iOS.  Super Mario Run looks fairly simple, yet a lot of fun.  You control Mario through classic looking levels as he runs and jumps his way to the flag at the end of the level.  Now, here’s the thing, Mario autoruns and you control the jumping.  The longer you hold your finger down on the screen the higher Mario will jump.

As hilariously demonstrated by Miyamoto, this simple control design allows you to play one handed.  You can hold onto a handrail, or eat a burger, or pick your nose while you play.  The possibilities are endless.

There are a couple other features within the game, Battle Mode, and Mushroom Kingdom.  In Battle Mode you can compete against your friends in a timed course to see who can get the highest score.  So, while you are one handedly playing, you could be racing the ghost of your friend’s high scores.

Everything you collect while playing allows you to expand and customize your very own Mushroom Kingdom.  While details on this feature are fairly space I can see it as a resource gathering/ management mini-game that will keep you hooked and coming back for me.

Super Mario Run will release in time for the Holiday Season and, just to make things more entertaining, there will also be Mario themed stickers available for iMessage.

So, there you have it, Nintendo and Apple.  Now I’m waiting for the seals to break and the four horsemen to come riding out.
