Once the Vampire Diaries announced that season 8 would be the final season, there has been much speculation about Nina Dobrev’s return. We finally have the answer in the form of a Instagram post:

I know it’s Thursday, but this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever

Showrunner Julie Plec said that Dobrev’s return was always gonna happen. Plec told Entertainment Weekly, “Nina has always said that if there’s something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it.”

Plec and executive producer Kevin Williamson said they were both thrilled. Dobrev’s return gives them the opportunity to end the show the way they had always intended.  Williams said, “I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!”

No big surprise for most TVD fans.  Dobrev played Elena Gilbert and doppelgänger Katherine Pierce for six seasons before deciding to leave the show. Instead of killing off Elena, they put her in a deep sleep.  Elena can only wake up when her best friend and mortal witch Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) dies. There is still hope that someone can find a way to wake up Elena without killing Bonnie.

The Vampire Diaries original cast  includes Dobrev, Graham, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Candice King, Michael Trevino, Steven McQueen, and Zach Roerig.  Dobrev, McQueen, and Trevino are the only original cast members to leave the show.  Although, Trevino’s character Tyler Lockwood has appeared this season.  Maybe McQueen will return as well.

The series finale will air on Friday March 10 on the CW.
