The hallmark of both the original Night Court and the current sequel series is Dan Fielding’s (John Larroquette) many random and self-serving schemes. In our exclusive sneak peek clip of this week’s episode, “Blood Moonstruck,” the 16th episode of Season 3, Dan trots out a classic injury con. But why?

Night Court, “Blood Moonstruck”
The blood moon is an ongoing part of the Night Court mythos. Back on Night Court Season 1 Episode 8, “Blood Moon Binga,” we met Abby’s (Melissa Rauch) mother, Gina (Faith Ford), and learned how she and Harry (Harry Anderson) really fell in love. In addition, there were cases involving a vampire couple, Satan’s daughter, and a wifwolf.

This time, the episode synopsis promises, “On the night of the blood moon, Abby and Gurgs (Lacretta) help Julianne (Wendie Malick) with a surprising romantic prospect; Wyatt (Nyambi Nyambi) finds himself in hot water when he fills in as Dan’s replacement.” With Wyatt having just passed the bar last week, that sounds like a rough start to his law career. And while we’re considering the situation, how exactly does hiring work in the NYC municipal system? Can you just work any position? Flobert (Gary Anthony Williams) seems to slide in wherever and whenever he likes — custodian, lawyer, judge, talent agent. Now Wyatt’s subbing as public defender? Who’s going to clerk?
Sneak Peek
In the exclusive clip below, Dan limps into Abby’s office decked out with a neck brace and wielding a cane, claiming he needs time off to recover from a terrible fall. Abby, of course, is sympathetic and grants the leave, only to have Dan whip off the brace and celebrate the convincingness of his ruse.

His explanation devolves into a rant about his building’s pet policy with classic Dan curmudgeon spice. The joy of Larroquette’s scenes with Rauch is that the characters never contradict each other’s statements. It’s a masterclass in “Yes, and…” when Abby offers up the many reasons Pomeranians will hump.

Blood moons bode well for Night Court as historically, the zaniness hits record highs. I suspect Dan’s injury tactic is only the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to pull up a front row seat to watch the spectacle sure to ensue.
New episodes of Night Court air on NBC Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c and stream the next day on Peacock.
