Deadline dropped exclusive casting news today for Universal’s upcoming monster film Renfield. Sources shared that Nicholas Hoult is on board to star in the film, but not in which role he will be taking. I hope that he will be starring as the title character. The film has Chris McKay attached to direct with an original story outline from Robert Kirkman and a script from Ryan Ridley.

Little is known about Renfield other than it will follow the character of R.M. Renfield. In Bram Stoker‘s original Dracula novel, he is an inmate at a mental institution. They thought he was suffering from delusions. However, he was actually Dracula’s servant. The character has been portrayed in some form over the years by Alexander Granach, Jack Shepard, Tom Waits and Peter MacNicol, to just name a few.
Deadline did share that their sources have described Renfield as a mixture of humor and action rather than focusing on the horror like Universal’s other properties. I’m hopeful, though, that this will have its moments of horror and pay homage to Dracula in some way. I am excited that we are going to see a film that dives more into R.M Renfield’s character and his connections with Dracula.
I am also very interested to learn who they will be casting in the role of Dracula. You can’t really tell a story about his henchman without having him, right? Even if it was just for a few moments here and there, the count has got to make an appearance. It’s too soon for a release date, but hopefully, we will hear more casting news soon! Are you excited about Renfield? How about Hoult in the role? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
