The late Nichelle Nichols will be among the Star Trek pioneers honored through “Voyager 01 – the Enterprise Flight.” The Enterprise Flight is so-called because its payload will also include samples of cremains and DNA from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, multi-role Trek actor Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, actor James Doohan (Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott) and visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull. Celestis, the memorial spaceflight organization established in 1994, organized the Enterprise Flight as a way to honor those who have brought the series to life.

In an article posted to Universe Today, it was reported that Celestis co-founder Charles Chafer contacted Kyle Johnson, Nichols’ son, to set up the memorial. He requested a sample of Nichols’ genome that was collected before her remains were cremated. The memorial will also include a gram of her cremains. It will be launched with United Launch Alliance’s first Vulcan Centaur mission. The mission’s primary objective is to deliver a robotic Peregrine lander to the moon. This lander will conduct scientific experiments in advance of NASA‘s upcoming crewed mission.

Once the Vulcan booster and Centaur upper stage have completed their roles in this primary mission, they will be sent to “graveyard orbit.” Inside their secondary payloads will be the 150 capsules containing cremains and DNA samples. A part of each individual memorialized will then persist in this orbit for an indefinite period of time.

Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 31, 2022, at the age of 89. She is perhaps best known for originating the role of Nyota Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series. Through her performance and her work in the intervening years, she inspired many women to pursue their scientific aspirations. Among the other memorials planned for Nichols is a video tribute during the third annual Star Trek Day on September 9, 2022. The event will be held at the Skirball Cultural Center in LA. It will also be live-streamed on Paramount Plus.
