Suicide Squad hits theatres in just one more month and, despite the critic-fueled failure of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Squad is looking to do quite well at the theatres.
And why shouldn’t it? It has some giant, respectable talent attached — Will Smith, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie — as well as featuring some of DC’s favorite, most notorious bad guys — Joker, Deadshot, and Harley Quinn, to name a few. The trailers have all looked great, promising a much funnier, wackier and out-there film than what Dawn of Justice was.
Honestly, in our humble opinion, this is the film that will turn Warner Bros‘ DC franchise around.
To add to the publicity, Entertainment Weekly did a big piece on the film this week, giving us some beautifully done portraits of each major character in the film, as well as some new information on each character. None of the information is earth-shattering, but some of them confirm that we’re getting some pretty cool character nuances and backgrounds from the comics in the film.
For instance, we’ve got confirmation that Harley’s backstory is still as a “psychiatrist-turned-obsessive-in-love,” that Katana (Karen Fukuhara) “still mourns the death of her husband,” and that June Moone (Cara Delevigne) is “a vessel sweet and pure” for a menacing witch that calls herself the Enchantress.
Also, we’d like to put in our bid that Slipknot (Adam Beach) is killed by Katana due to him not “being good with authority figures.” After all, they need someone to make an example, right?
Perhaps our favorite one is that Will Smith’s character Deadshot, a.k.a. Floyd Lawton, “enjoys the hunt but is still trying to do right by his young daughter.”
This is most likely Zoe Lawton, created by Christos Gage and Steven Cummings. She is Deadshot’s only real weak spot and leverage. You might remember a paparazzi shot during filming last year that showed Will Smith with his presumed daughter.
It looks like we’ll be getting some backstory on more of our Squad than just Harley Quinn, which is necessary for humanizing these characters who would just be homicidal villains otherwise.
