A Return to the Games
A new Hunger Games novel is coming — and soon. Scholastic announced the next installation of Suzanne Collins‘ bestselling series on Thursday. Read on to find out what else we know!

Scholastic announced that Sunrise on the Reaping will begin with the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games. The new book takes place 24 years before the original Hunger Games trilogy and 40 years after the prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Speaking with the Associated Press, Collins said of the next installment, “With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few. The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
Fans have speculated for years about the possibility of another Hunger Games novel or series. Many hoped for a focus on the second Quarter Quell, in which Haymitch Abernathy competed. Ellie Berger, president of Scholastic Trade, acknowledged that interest, stating, “Sunrise on the Reaping is a remarkable book, bringing new complexity, perspective, and revelations to a piece of the Hunger Games story that readers have longed to know more about.”

With the announcement of a new book, Lionsgate also announced a film adaptation and a release date. Francis Lawrence, who directed four of the Hunger Games movies, will return as director. The original series starred Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen alongside Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci and more. The film adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes came out last year, featuring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler in lead roles.
