Pacific Rim 2 casting news is coming more frequently recently and we have more announcements, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona, and Levi Meaden are all joining the sequel. Jing Tian recently starred in the yet to be released movies The Great Wall and Kong: Skull Island. Adria Arjona comes from True Detectives and the upcoming Emerald City series fro NBC. Levi Meaden is currently appearing in Syfy’s Aftermath.
As with almost all other casting announcements there are no descriptions of the characters they will portray. The three join John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and Cailee Spaeny. Still no word yet regarding returning actors and actresses such as Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Burn Gorman, Charlie Day, or Ron Perlman.
After Charlie Hunnam‘s exit, the script went through extensive rewrites which might account for the black hole of information we currently find ourselves in. While it’s nice to see more females joining the cast, a huge improvement over the first movie, it’s still frustrating to know nothing about returning characters. I completely understand rewrites happening, I completely understand why Hunnam left, I don’t understand why we know nothing about characters from the first movie.
Just because Raleigh Becket isn’t making an appearance doesn’t mean Mako Mori can’t return. I will keep saying it until we get confirmation Kikuchi is in or out.
It’s also hard to imagine the movie without Gorman, Day, Perlman, and even Clifton Collins, Jr. What about the voice of GLaDOS, Ellen McLain? Will we get her back? I loved the Portal nod in the first, it was brilliant.
Right now there are too many questions and not enough answers.
Pacific Rim 2 (at some point we will get an official title) is scheduled to invade theaters February 23, 2018. So there is still a long way to go.
