The covers of three new book releases coming out on September 24: The Naming Song, Intermezzo, and Graveyard Shift

There are a lot of new books coming out every week. With New Release Radar, I’ll help you narrow down the week’s new book releases into the titles you should get excited about. This week I have seven books to share, including a fantastical adventure, family dramas and more. Read on!

The Naming Song by Jedediah Berry

When words vanish, borders collapse and monsters and ghosts roam freely. Humanity clings to survival through the committees of Maps, Ghosts, Dreams and Names, which build mental and physical barriers to protect against the horrors of the nameless wilds. A courier for the Names Committee, tasked with delivering new words, finds herself fleeing after a series of attacks. Joined by a ghost, a monster and a mysterious animal, she embarks on a journey to find her long-lost sister and uncover a truth that could reshape their world.

The Naming Song is a new book release full of strange adventures and dangerous truths. Jedediah Berry’s work is richly imagined, full of beautiful, theatrical prose.

Pick the Lock by A.S. King

The cover of Pick the Lock has an old fashioned television on a red tablecloth between a tarnished fork and knife. Above them is a plate with a slice of cake, two teal candles, and two crystal glasses.

Jane Vandermaker-Cook wants her mother back. While her mother tours the world to support the family, Jane and her younger brother live in a Victorian mansion with their deceitful father, who confines their mother to a system of pneumatic tubes whenever she’s home. Aunt Finch is always around, along with Milorad the gardener and his rat, Brutus. For Jane, this bizarre life seems normal—until she gains access to a trove of security camera footage documenting her entire life.

A.S. King is the most decorated young adult author of our time, and she isn’t afraid to tackle heavy themes. Pick the Lock is her latest work of surrealist fiction, and it’s one that encourages readers to search for their own freedom.

When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson

The Fall siblings live in scorching Northern California wine country, where the relentless sun and devil winds rule. Years ago, their father’s mysterious disappearance shattered the family. Dizzy, 12, bakes cakes and sees spirits, Miles, 17, is lost despite his talents, and Wynton, 19, is a violinist on the edge of fame or self-destruction. When a rainbow-haired girl enters their lives she seems vital to each of them, but catastrophe strikes before they can uncover her mystery, leaving the family more broken and desperate for healing.

Filled with road trips, rivalries, families and layered love stories, When the World Tips Over explores the tangled past and present of a complicated family. Jandy Nelson’s new book release is a long, deep read, and one that you won’t want to put down.

Graveyard Shift by M. L. Rio

Every night, five people working late shifts cross paths in the college’s old cemetery: a bartender, rideshare driver, hotel receptionist, church steward and the editor of the college paper. One October evening, they discover a fresh, open grave where none should be. As they follow the mysterious gravedigger through the night, they realize he’s linked to a series of strange events making headlines – and that they may be closer to the truth than they ever imagined.

Seven years after her debut If We Were Villains, M.L. Rio is back. Graveyard Shift is an atmospheric novella perfect for the start of fall.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Wrath of the Triple Goddess by Rick Riordan

The cover of Wrath of the Triple Goddess has a goddess with three heads - a horse, a lion, and a dog - and a goblet in each hand.

Percy Jackson, now a high school senior, needs three recommendation letters from the gods for New Rome University. After finally earning the first, Percy gets another task: pet-sitting Hecate’s mastiff, Hecuba, and her polecat, Gale. It seems simple, but when Grover drinks a potion that turns him into a giant rampaging goat, Hecuba and Gale escape. Now, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover must track down the runaway pets and fix the damage before Hecate returns – relying on demigod wits, luck and help from friends to set things right.

Rick Riordan is back with another Percy Jackson adventure! Wrath of the Triple Goddess is another hilarious take on the Greek gods and their effects on the real world, combined with the less hilarious anxieties of college admissions.

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

Peter and Ivan Koubek, though brothers, lead vastly different lives. Peter, a successful Dublin lawyer, struggles to cope with their father’s death, navigating his relationships with two women: his first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a carefree college student. Meanwhile, Ivan, a 22-year-old chess player, feels socially isolated and the complete opposite of his confident older brother. In the wake of their loss, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman with a troubled past, and their connection quickly deepens, changing both of their lives.

Global phenomenon Sally Rooney’s new book release has her signature ability for writing interpersonal relationships and genuine human connection. Intermezzo is a meditation on grief, love and family that both her fans and newcomers will appreciate.

A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan

The land of Ascarlia, ruled by the Sister Queens for centuries, faces a rising threat: longships of tattooed warriors, followers of a murderous cult thought to be extinct. The Queens send their trusted servant Thera of Blackspear to uncover the truth behind the whispers. Meanwhile, her estranged brother Felnir embarks on his own quest to find the Vault of the Altvar, hoping to earn the Queens’ favor. As the siblings’ fates intertwine, a young scribe and a dangerous prisoner are drawn into the storm. The Age of Wrath has begun.

A Tide of Black Steel is a great introduction to an epic new fantasy trilogy. Inspired by Norse mythology, Anthony Ryan’s new series is full of fantastic characters, creative world-building and earth-shattering secrets.
