There are a lot of new books coming out every week. With New Release Radar, I’ll help you narrow down all the week’s new book releases into the titles you should get excited about. I have seven books to recommend this week, including one for dragon lovers and another that should make Bridgerton fans pretty happy. Read on!
To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
When 15-year-old Anequs finds and bonds with a dragon egg, her people are delighted. No one has seen a dragon for generations, but everyone knows the tales of the days when dragons lived among them. But the Anglish conquerors have different opinions on how dragons should be raised and who gets to raise them. However, because of the bond Anequs and the dragon, Kasaqua, share, they reluctantly allow her to enroll in Kuiper’s Academy of Natural Philosophy and Skiltakraft. There, Anequs will become a proper Anglish young woman. If she doesn’t meet their expectations, Kasaqua will be killed.
To Shape a Dragon’s Breath has so many things going for it. It centers on a queer, poly, Indigenous character, dragon-riding and a boarding school setting. With a focus on dismantling colonialism and taking back heritage, what more could you ask for in a young adult fantasy? I can’t wait for Moniquill Blackgoose‘s debut.

The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer
After her kindergarten teacher died in front of her, Clover Brooks has always felt connected to the dying. In her career as a death doula in New York City, she spends so much time with the dying that she doesn’t have a life of her own. But when a feisty old woman’s dying wish sends Clover on a cross-country trip to find a lost love, she must examine what she really wants if she has the courage to go for it.
Mikki Brammer’s debut is life-affirming and hopeful. This new release sounds perfect for fans of Matt Haig‘s The Midnight Library.
Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman
What could be better than a retelling of the first superhero novels, now with more vampires?! That’s precisely what Scarlet is. Set during the French Revolution, the aristocracy slaughtered at the guillotine consists of literal bloodsuckers. The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel sets out to rescue the nobility with the help of a housemaid named Eleanor. The spitting image of a French aristocrat, she’s sent to Paris to aid the Scarlet Pimpernel. But there’s more there than just revolutionaries; once there, Eleanor finds herself embroiled in a centuries-old war between vampires and their fiercest enemy.
Genevieve Cogman’s new release starts a trilogy reinventing a familiar tale initially written in 1905. Scarlet is fun and well-paced and even has a slow-burn romance. Check this one out, and then anxiously await the sequel.

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece by Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks is back with another book! Unlike his 2017 short story collection, Uncommon Type, this is a full-blown novel spanning nearly a century. When a troubled soldier returns from war, he inspires his nephew to write a comic book starring him as a World War 2 hero. 50 years later, a director discovers the comic and decides to make it into a full-blown action movie,
Along with the story itself, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece includes three full comics created by Hanks himself! The actor’s insight into movie-making will undoubtedly make this book a hit.
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz
Lady Camembert wants to live life on her own terms, which is difficult when the law says women can’t inherit. But her father’s dying wish is for her to marry, even though she’s sworn she’ll never marry a man. To keep her inheritance, she disguises herself as a man and moves to the crowded capital of the Kingdom of Fromage. There, she tries to keep a low profile as the new Count Camembert. But going unnoticed is difficult once she meets the beautiful Princess Brie, an outspoken activist and sharp dresser. As the two grow closer, will Camembert be able to keep her secret?
Obviously, this graphic novel by Deya Muniz has a lot of cheese puns. It’s also an incredibly sweet YA story of two girls falling in love, and it’s one new release you definitely don’t want to miss.

This new release is a tie-in to the Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte on Netflix, which premiered last week. It takes a deeper dive into a character that makes few appearances in Julia Quinn‘s original books but quickly became a standout in the show. I’m excited to see where this story goes!
