Alien: Covenant has a new poster that is stunning and horrifying and oh, so exciting.  The image was released by 20th Century Fox via Twitter on Thursday.

The tagline for Alien: Covenant has long been ‘the path to paradise begins in hell’.  They’ve used that theme effectively in the teasers, trailer and promo.  The premise of the movie is that the human race is sending it’s first colonists to another planet (it’s a prequel to the Alien films we know and love).  This planet is a perfect fit, so what could possibly go wrong?  It’s paradise.  No, it’s not.

This image brings that theme to a whole new level, and evokes some very well known images for an art history fan like me.

Part of the reason this poster is so exceedingly cool, is that it’s keying in to depictions of hell that people have been creating and looking at for centuries.  The devils and the humans are entangled in a torturous cluster of war, pain and death.  All of our most horrible fears are beautifully presented so we can look at them while keeping rational thoughts in our heads.

I’ve included a couple of paintings that the Alien: Covenant poster made me think of, so you can see the genius of this image.  So cool.  I can’t wait for this movie!!

Alien: Covenant opens May 19th.
