Netflix’s upcoming live-action Resident Evil series is almost here! Who doesn’t need more zombies, T-Virus, and Weskers? But what do we really know about the series? It follows a brand new storyline in a semi-familiar setting. The series is based on the top-rated video game franchise from Capcom and even has thrown out ideas that it is tied to the cannon story as well. The who and when are still up in the air, and we have a feeling we won’t get answers until it airs. But, we can share with you everything we currently know about the series so far.

Resident Evil drops on Netflix starting July 14, 2022.

The Plot

Resident Evil follows two distinct timelines that will be explored during the show. The first is when the Wesker sisters, the daughters of Albert Wesker, are young. They recently moved to New Raccoon City, where their dad works for the Umbrella Company. Through the trailers, we learned that Albert Wesker has been working on something called Joy, which contains the T-Virus. And nothing good comes from any of those things. After something goes terribly wrong – see our previous statement – over half of the world’s population is wiped out.

The second half of the series takes place 13 years after the terrifying events. Jade Wesker is fighting to survive in this terrifying world as a plethora of zombies and other creatures are wreaking havoc. There are clearly lickers in the trailer, and after only getting to see one in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, we hope Jade has to face off against an army of them. But Jade isn’t just trying to survive monsters. She is also trying to come to terms with her dad’s involvement and what happened to her sister Billie.

The Cast

So who will be living out one terrifying nightmare after another in the upcoming Resident Evil series? Ella Balinska will be leading the series as Jade Wesker alongside Lance Reddick as Albert and Siena Agundong as Billie. Tamara Smart will be playing a young Jade Wesker in the prequel portion of the series. Alongside them, the series will also star Turlough Convery, Connor Gosatti, Tetiana Gaidar, Lea Vivier, Bjorn Steinbach, Mpho Osei Tutu, Hanni Heinrich, Paola Nuñez, Adeline Rudolph, Ayushi Chhabra, Ahad Raza Mir, Rizelle Januk, Suraya Rose Santos and Evan Hengst in various roles. Outside of the Wesker family, we don’t know much about what roles the other characters will play or if they will be major or minor.

Our Theories

Netflix has kept some of the best parts of Resident Evil under wraps. They’ve shown us a bit of the mystery, tons of zombies and a post-apocalyptic world. We know that Umbrella is going to do something terrible – because they always do. And that Wesker has something to do with it. But who is this Wesker? Showrunner Andrew Dabb has hinted that there is more to changing his race. In one of the more recent trailers, we caught a glimpse of a tyrant trying to break out of a chamber. Could this be Alex Wesker’s body after he “died” in Resident Evil 5? Is Reddick’s Wesker just a temporary body? Or a new body so he can continue his reign of terror? Or are we all overthinking this?

Another theory that we have that spawns from the Wesker/Brain transfer theory is Jade’s sister’s role in the series. We don’t know what happens to her during the events of the prequel timeline, just that when the series picks up 13 years in the future, she is gone. Was she ever really there? Or was she an experiment created to test the Joy pill? Or was she a way to continue testing the transfer of his consciousness into other beings? Is she the reason that the world nearly ended? It wouldn’t be the first time an experiment came to bite Umbrella Corp in the tush. We hope that Jade isn’t going to have to fight against her sister to save everyone.

And finally, what is New Raccoon City? Was it not enough that Umbrella Corp forced the government to completely blow the old one sky-high? Could it be less of a town and more of a secret, undergroundish lab that Umbrella wants the residents to believe is a real place? It would explain how Umbrella and a new terrifying city could exist in the current cannon. No one would be the wiser if Umbrella used a different name outside of its test city. Then it could go on being the evil, terrible company it is and testing its Joy pills on people with its weird teddy bear mascot. It is like we have learned nothing from the games.
