Thanksgiving has passed and the turkey has been eaten. Those celebrating Christmas are finally allowed to decorate and celebrate with abandon (at least without my judging stare) and all the other holidays that mark the end of the year are ramping up. Netflix already released a full lineup of Christmas movies in November, so what can we expect from them in December? A little bit of everything, it appears!
Oddly missing from the list is an abundance of New Year’s Eve shows for the kiddos, but perhaps they will arrive without warning. The kids’ movies and shows do seem to be lacking overall, though. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Super Monsters and the Wish Star, and Dance & Sing with True: Songs seem to be the only new arrivals for the children. This may be a good time to teach them how to build a snow fort or practice baking cookies for Santa and then turn on Netflix when they go down for a nap or for are out the night.
The programming for the adults and older children is much more plentiful. There are even some late season horror shows coming, like Bride of Chucky and Shaun of the Dead. Honorable mentions for the adults include District 9, Hellboy, The Theory of Everything, the eighth season of Voltron: Legendary Defender, the third season of Travelers, and the third season of The Magicians. Also included as an honorable mention is a very adult dark comedy, HAPPY!; while there is a cute little imaginary unicorn, it can’t be stressed enough that this is NOT a children’s show! See what we picked as our must-watch Netflix arrivals and then see the full list of what is coming – and leaving – Netflix this December!

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
Netflix studios have brought forth Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, their rendition of Rudyard Kipling‘s The Jungle Book. Andy Serkis directed the film in which Mowgli (Rohan Chand), the man-cub, tries to figure out where he belongs; he was not born for the jungle, but he doesn’t seem to fit in with the world of man. This live-action movie brings the story to life with motion-caption CGI and a star-studded voice cast including Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Cate Blanchett. Get ready for a retelling of a classic favorite on December 7th!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale
One of the newest hits on Netflix is their recent October release, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Set in the same universe as (and from the same creators of) Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows teen witch Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) as she comes of age and navigates the troubles that fall being a witch attempting to live in the mortal realm. This Christmas special is set to see the Church of Night celebrate the Winter Solstice with families gathered around the Yule fire to sing pagan carols and tell ghost stories. As with any celebration of this magnitude, unwelcome guests have a tendency to show up unannounced. Celebrate with Sabrina when the special airs on December 14th!

Avengers: Infinity War
Arriving in hot on Christmas morning is the only gift you need to open immediately: Marvel‘s Avengers: Infinity War! Picking up right on the heels of Thor: Ragnarok, Infinty War takes no time at all to bring the feels and the urgency to fight. It brings together the official Avengers team from earth and the somewhere-in-space Guardians of the Galaxy to battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his need to control the infinity stones. If you’ve already seen the film in theaters, you know exactly what to expect and you can rewatch over and over to take it all in (and kindly keep spoilers to yourself). If you haven’t seen the film, get ready for a ride, both in action and emotion. This is Part 1 of the story with Part 2 (currently still untitled) arriving to theaters May 2019, so don’t look for a story wrapped up nicely with a little bow. Avengers: Infinity War hits Netflix on December 25th.
