We’re returning to Nevermore Academy, woeful outcasts. In an unsurprising move, Netflix has renewed the global phenomenon starring our favorite miserable Goth, Wednesday, for Season 2. The mega-streamer shared a Season 2 announcement video featuring Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) recounting what transpired during her first year at Nevermore. She almost died, was haunted, encountered a strange beast and put a killer behind bars—normal teenager stuff.
Deadline reports Wednesday is only the third Netflix series to cross the “1 billion hours viewed” threshold. The show accomplished this in less than a month, dethroning Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story as the second most-watched US series. Season 4 of Stranger Things remains in the top spot.

From the minds behind Smallville, Al Gough and Miles Millar, Wednesday boasts four episodes directed by Tim Burton. Burton also serves as executive producer alongside Gough and Millar. Besides Ortega as the titular character, Season 1 stars Gwendoline Christie, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Hunter Doohan, Jamie McShane, Riki Lindhome, Percy Hynes White, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer and Christina Ricci. Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Isaac Ordonez and Fred Armisen appear as Gomez Addams, Morticia Addams, Pugsley Addams and Uncle Fester, respectively.
Here’s what co-showrunners Millar and Gough told Tudum regarding the show’s renewal:
“We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore. We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first. It’s been incredible to create a show that’s connected with people across the world. We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into Season 2.”

If you recall, the Season 1 finale provided a few loose threads to unravel for a second season. While Wednesday heads home (after classes are canceled because of Principal Larissa Weems’ murder — RIP), she receives a series of texts from an unknown number. So, a stalker runs rampant, and the Hyde is still out there. Even though Tyler’s in police custody, there’s a chance we might see him again.
Despite a few speedbumps, I thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday. Inaugural seasons are seldom perfect, and it can only get better from here. Jenna Ortega is, hands down, the best part of this series. It’s challenging to churn out a memorable, riveting and nuanced performance of a legendary character on the heels of Christina Ricci’s portrayal. Still, Ortega offers a deeply layered iteration that might eclipse the ’90s version for me. I can’t wait to see her reprise this role.
