Uhtred of Bebbanburg is back for more brutal and bloody battles. Variety unveiled first-look photos for Netflix’s The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, the follow-up feature to the popular historical drama series The Last Kingdom. In addition, we also have a premiere date for the highly anticipated flick.

Here’s a synopsis of the film per Netflix:

“Uhtred must ride once more across a fractured kingdom with several of the series’ much-loved returning characters as they battle alongside, and against, new allies and enemies. Following the death of King Edward, a battle for the crown ensues as rival heirs and invaders compete for power. And when an alliance comes seeking Uhtred’s help in their plans, Uhtred faces a choice between those he cares for most and the dream of forming a united England.”

Alexander Dreymon, who portrays the charismatic and bold Uhtred, reprises his role and serves as executive producer. He released a statement regarding the upcoming movie:

“It has been such an honor to be part of telling this story for all these years. As an actor, I have been so challenged and gratified by the privilege of playing Uhtred. Hanging up Uhtred’s sword after filming Seven Kings felt, ironically, heavy — even though I know that our tale has reached its conclusion. As an EP on the show, I could not be more proud of the hundreds of people who spent thousands of hours to make the best product possible. As for our loyal fans…what can I say? You are the reason we’ve reached this point and got to bring our saga to the end. This, as it always has been, is for you.”

The Last Kingdom ran for five seasons from 2015 to 2022. It’s based on the book series by Bernard Cornwell. Besides Dreymon, the show also starred Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith, Arnas Fedaravicius as Sihtric, Mark Rowley as Finan and Emily Cox as Brida. The series featured prominent supporting appearances from My PolicemanDavid Dawson, Surface‘s Millie Brady and House of the Dragon‘s Ewan Mitchell

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die boasts a script by Martha Hillier with Ed Bazalgette at the helm as director. The aforementioned first-look images feature Uhtred, Sihtric and Finan pulling on ropes and shouting (there’s a lot of shouting in the series, so this tracks). Another photo showcases a serious Father Pyrlig, played by Cavan Clerkin. One picture has Finan astride a majestic horse and looking ready for battle.

You can check out the images below. Brace yourself for war when The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die premieres on April 14, 2023, only on Netflix.
