We are a little over a month away from season four of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. And after months of teasing, we finally have an official trailer. The first three seasons of Stranger Things dove heavily into the science fiction; everything will be okay with the power of friendship; silly Dungeons and Dragons references while also carrying more serious tones below the surface. But from the brand new trailer, it seems that season four is bringing those serious themes to the surface as our heroes deal with the impending war and consequences of season three’s events.

The season four trailer for Stranger Things opens as an ominous voice tells us that we have broken everything and our suffering is almost at an end. We also catch a glimpse at the creepy grandfather clock that seems to be making an appearance throughout the trailer as well. What is it counting down to and could this be their way into the Upside Down? We then jump to Max (Sadie Sink), visiting the grave of her brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and filling him in on what has been happening.

His death at the end of season three, Hopper’s (David Harbour) disappearance, El (Millie Bobby Brown) and the Byers’ move out of town have been rough on everyone. They tried to focus on happy things, but it’s hard to bury the pain and suffering they have all endured. But that doesn’t seem to be all. Max goes on to share that things strange things (even stranger than before) have been happening in Hawkins. We then flip to El, who meets with Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) as he shares with her (and us) that her friends in Hawkins seem to be at the center of everything.

A war is brewing and if El can’t get her powers back, they might not be able to win. This leads to a montage of everyone coming together to prepare to fight against whatever is coming. We even get a chance to catch them traveling within what looks like the Upside Down. But where the previous seasons’ trailers had those little moments of fear, they weren’t overall scary. The trailer for Stranger Things season four seems to be diving right into it. Like an 80s horror movie and we can’t look away. It makes the final monster reveal at the end that much more enjoyable and we can’t ignore how Max’s levitating looks awfully similar to the monsters. And the monster’s name is Vecna, making him another reference to the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

Season four of Stranger Things stars Sink, Harbour, Brown, Reiser alongside Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Winona Ryder, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman and Joseph Quinn. It also stars Matthew Modine, Jamie Campbell Bower, Eduardo Franco, Sherman Augustus, Mason Dye, Nikola Djuricko, Tom Wlaschiha, Myles Truitt, Regina Ting Chen, Grace Van Dien, Logan Allen, Elodie Grace Orkin, John Reynolds, Rob Morgan, Amybeth McNulty and Robert Englund.
