Netflix is taking over the world of… print. Yep. It is officially launching its first comic book, and in anticipation of the event, unveiled a trailer for the book, Wednesday. It’s called The Magic Order, and it’s coming to a comic book shop near you.
The six-issue series, published by Image Comics, was written by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Civil War) and illustrated by Olivier Coipel (Thor, Avengers). Netflix bought Millar’s comic book company, Millarworld, a little over a year ago. So, this seems a logical step.
The story follows five magician families that protect the world from the forces of evil, according to The Verge. Millar has been touting it as somewhat of an adult Harry Potter, but he’s also compared it to The Sopranos and that’s quite a mix. Millar said of the comic, “Tonally, it’s actually closer to The Sopranos in that it’s about a patriarch in an underworld family and his concerns about his children. King Lear is the basic structure, if that doesn’t sound too pompous, but with magic wands. And it’s dirty. It opens with a shagging scene, so you immediately know this isn’t Hogwarts.” Yep, that’ll do it.
The Magic Order will only be available in hard copy until the first series is sold out. They’re not printing it again, so you’d better get yours if you’re a ‘book in my hands’ kind of human. You can buy a digital copy for the same $3.99 that’ll get you the printed one. It’ll hit your local comic book shop on June 13th, and is available for preorder now.
