Netflix GEEKED WEEK 2022 made my little Resident Evil horror heart so happy today. As we neared the end of the showcase, I was worried we wouldn’t get any news surrounding the upcoming series. But they didn’t fail us, and we now have the official trailer for this terrifying zombie-filled series. Without a doubt, the trailer shows us that the series is going to be great and a perfect addition to Capcom‘s beloved horror franchise.

Resident Evil takes place over two timelines. The first introduces us to New Raccoon City, where Albert Wesker (Lance Riddick) moves his family and works for the Umbrella Corp. Something horrible happens, of course, and the second timeline takes place years later as Wesker’s daughter Jade (Ella Balinska) has to navigate the new post-apocalyptic world. She will be piecing together her father’s connection to Umbrella and her sister’s fate. And tons of zombies.

The new trailer for Resident Evil gives us everything we want and love from the franchise. We are drifted into a false sense of security as the Weskers settle into their new lives. But all good things must come to an end, right? It seems that Umbrella Corp might not be ready to be the good guys just yet. The trailer quickly flips the script, and we are thrown into the future, where Jade is leading a group of survivors and facing off against all of our favorite Resident Evil bad guys.

The big question on Resident Evil fans’ minds is how this connects to the game’s current canon. Netflix has shared that it does, in fact, fall into the game’s timeline but not how. Albert Wesker is one of the biggest bad guys and well-known antagonists in the series. If you have played at least one game, chances are you have at least heard of him. But his death came at the end of Resident Evil 5 at the hands of Chris Redfield. Or did it?

We see a short bit at the end of the trailer where a tyrant-looking giant is trying to break out of a chamber. Could Wesker have survived Anakin Skywalker style? It wouldn’t be a far stretch to say that Umbrella rebuilt him, which would explain his change in appearance. Or, in a real twist of events, we might learn that this Albert Wesker is someone pretending to be him and infiltrating Umbrella for his own nefarious means. We are just going to have to wait until it airs to find out!

Resident Evil will hit the streaming service on July 14, 2022. Check out the first full trailer below. What are your throughs so far? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
