The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Netflix has landed the rights to Xbox and The Coalition’s highly popular video game Gears of War. The streamer service and developer will partner to develop a feature film adaptation and an animated series. Currently, they have not announced any producers, writers, directors, cast or even what story the film or series will follow. But, after the success of their other video game adaptations, we highly suspect we will hear things very soon.

Gears of War is a part of a larger franchise that has been around since 2006. The original game follows disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix and the Delta Squad. Their planet is on the brink of societal collapse when the Locust, underground creatures, take humanity to the verge of extinction. Marcus and his fellow Delta Squad members find themselves in the middle of this battle and humanity’s only hope.
This isn’t the first time someone has tried to adapt Gears of War into a film or tv series. However, previous projects rarely made it out of the gate. The franchise is one of those video game series that is perfect for adaptation. The franchise is known for its high-octane action and being a third-person shooter-style game, but it’s much more than that. The story within the franchise is packed with tons of lore and investing storylines that would be great to see in film/television.

This Gears of War project will join the ranks of the other video game adaptations launched on Netflix. Its production will coincide with the Bioshock movie being helmed by Francis Lawrence. And while Netflix has had some ups and downs over the years with its adaptations, and honestly, who hasn’t? They seem to have found their groove. Their adaptions of The Witcher, Castlevania, Arcane, The Cuphead Show, and so many more are proof.
Hopefully, now that Netflix has announced its intentions for Gears of War, the gears…will get moving. I’ll see myself out. But, in all seriousness, this is exciting news. What are your thoughts on the announcement? Who is your perfect casting for Marcus and the Delta Squad? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
