Every month, Netflix rotates their selection. Knowing this but not paying attention to the press release lists can lead to some unhappy households (like my husband and I waking up one morning to find X-Files gone) and some super happy nostalgia moments (like my husband cheesy-grinning over the animated The Real Ghostbusters).
With a few days left in April, there are still a few shows and movies scheduled to leave ahead of May 1st. For your convenience, and last-ditch binging planning, I’ve included these leaving in the list below.
First, though, a few highlights of what is coming, presented alphabetically to avoid ranking (although, honestly, I am emphatically most excited about #2).
1. BLAME!
BLAME! is a subtitled Netflix Original film adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei’s cyberpunk manga of the same name. In BLAME!, a loner, Kirii (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai), attempts to save humanity by searching for Net Terminal Genes, a genetic marker that allows humans to access the control network of The City. The City is a vast artificial construct that is continually expanding and inhabited by humans, human-hybrids, and cyborgs. With so much ground to cover and many obstacles, will Kirii succeed?
2. Marvel’s Doctor Strange
This visually stunning Marvel movie ushered magic into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was the best neurosurgeon around until a car accident mangled his hands. In his quest to return to the top of his career, Dr. Strange finds himself in Kathmandu in search of an experimental treatment to restore full functionality of his hands. What he finds instead sets him upon a path far greater than he expected or fully understands. Doctor Strange takes place in the same universe and time-frame as the majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Iron Man, The Avengers, Thor, and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

3. House of Cards: Season 5
The fifth season of Netflix’s original show, House of Cards, has new show runners, Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese, and introduces a few new characters while bringing back those you love (or hate or love to hate). It promises to answer some questions and will most likely raise new ones. What we want to know from this season: With the nation at war with terrorism and his dirty deeds being sniffed out in the media, can Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) maintain his presidency and win an election with wife Claire (Robin Wright) as his running mate? What other obstacles will arise and how will the Underwoods crush them?

4. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 3
Season 3 of this Netflix Original is the season in which Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), armed with her GED, goes to college! Kimmy must also deal with the fact she is married to her captor, the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm). Her friends, landlady Lillian (Carol Kane) and roommate Titus (Titus Burgess), also have some relationship drama to sort out; Lillian breaks up with her boyfriend while Titus gets revenge on his boyfriend for cheating.

5. The Mars Generation
This Netflix Original documentary examines the drive and idea of sending a manned mission to Mars. It includes interviews with the teens dedicating their life to Mars and notable scientists. The documentary, which debuted at The Sundance Film Festival, shares a name with a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring a love of STEM and the idea of deep space exploration, including a mission to Mars.

6. Riverdale: Season 1
Riverdale is just a typical small town: quiet and wholesome. At least it is on the surface. A murder over the summer sends ripples through the friendships at the high school and with the new school year, things get crazy. Originally airing on The CW, Riverdale is based on the characters from Archie Comics, bringing Archie (KJ Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Veronica (Camila Mendes) to life in a teen drama / mystery.
7. Sherlock: Season 4

More Benedict Cumberbatch? Yes, please!
Catch up with Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) at 221B Baker Street and see the fallout from Moriarty’s “Did you miss me?” broadcast message from the end of Season 3. This season of BBC‘s Sherlock delves into Mary’s past, puts lives on the line, and bring’s Sherlock’s childhood into the spotlight. There are plenty of twists and misdirection, just the way Sherlock prefers to operate.
