Everyone makes their plans for New Year’s Eve, which usually includes a countdown leading to a kiss at midnight or a toast of something sparkling, but what about after that? Besides whatever New Year’s Day traditions you have, do you really stop to think about how you will spend the first day of the new year? Or how you will spend the new month? If the answer is no, might I interest you in some Netflix binge options?
January 2018 brings with it several classic favorites, like Breakfast at Tiffany‘s, the entire 1980s/1990s Batman film series, the Lethal Weapon series, the The Godfather series, and Caddyshack – and that is just the highlights from January 1st! I’ve chosen a few upcoming selections below, but do check out the full list of what is coming to Netflix and be sure to check the list of shows that are leaving so you can properly plan your end of year binging!
Cars 3
After you and your little ones get your fill of ringing in 2018 with Netflix’s New Years Eve Countdown specials, you can surprise them with the newest Cars sequel! The Disney⋅Pixar animation team brings to life the tale of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) working to prove he is still a fast race car in the ever evolving world of racing. He makes a bet that will shape his future: will he win and retain his title or will he lose and fade into a sales career? Cars 3 features everyone’s favorites, Lightning McQueen, Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), and Sally (Bonnie Hunt), and introduces Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), Smokey (Chris Cooper), Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), Sterling (Nathan Fillion), Natalie Certain (Kerry Washington), and Miss Fritter (Lea DeLaria), along with actual NASCAR drivers.
Cars 3 arrives to Netflix on January 31st.

Apollo 13
Some times, Hollywood pulls inspiration for their films from real life events, like the recent Deepwater Horizon film. Back in 1995, that film was Apollo 13. Netflix is bringing this NASA historical drama on New Year’s Day. For those too young to remember or not yet fully up on their NASA history, Apollo 13 started as an ordinary lunar mission launched in April of 1970 but equipment failure (an oxygen tank explosion) led to an emergency and life-threatening situation. NASA specialists, from inside Mission Control, worked around the clock to walk the stranded crew through a makeshift repair. The ingenuity and calm of everyone involved sets this real-life drama apart from all the other offerings coming to your streaming service.
Apollo 13 stars Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris. The film joins Netflix’s lineup on January 1st.

Batman (1989)
Long before Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight trilogy, there was the “Original” Batman series, all started with Tim Burton‘s 1989 film, Batman. Michael Keaton brings Bruce Wayne to life in this more serious and darker toned rendition of the caped crusader, as compared to the 1960s television show (though not as dark-toned as The Dark Knight). Keaton works opposite Jack Nicholson‘s perfectly sociopathic Joker. Bruce Wayne’s romantic interest in this film is Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger), a reporter interested in writing a piece on the Batman vigilante, and an eventual hostage of the Joker. Though Tim Burton helms the directorial duties, the movie is not a typical Burton film. Does this 1980s production hold up in today’s world? I’ll leave that to you to decide.
The sequels that followed, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin, are also joining Netflix alongside Batman on January 1st.
