The Matrix 4 is really happening with Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss officially on board. This will be the fourth live-action film in the Matrix saga. Variety reports that Lana Wachowski also returns to write, direct, and produce the film.
1999’s The Matrix is about a hacker who discovers his reality isn’t what it seems to be. Artificial Intelligence has taken over, using humans as batteries and putting them in a dream state known as the Matrix. Reeves led the cast as Neo, the chosen one who joins the human revolution led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Morpheus and others have all escaped the Matrix and are waging a war against the AI forces.
There were two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions with the latter being released in 2003. In the final film, Moss’s character Trinity died and Neo sacrificed himself to the AI forces. Lana and Lilly Wachowski wrote and directed all three films.
Warner Bros and Village Roadshow will produce and distribute the film. WB Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday. He stated that they are excited to be working with Lana Wachowski. Warner Bros has been trying for a while to get back in The Matrix. Needless to day, Reeves’ recent success at the box office generated interest in Wachowski’s script.
Wachowski told Variety, “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
So, first I’m wondering how will they bring back Trinity and Neo? Second, is there a time jump? Finally – what is the new evil out there that disrupts everything all over again? Variety reports that some sources are saying there could be a possible recast of Morpheus with a younger actor. That’s a shame if it happens.
Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell are co-writing the script with Wachowski with Grant Hill co-producing.
The Matrix 4 does not a release date as of yet. Geek Girl Authority will be watching this development closely.
