Doctor Who is about to get a hefty dose of NPH! The BBC announced via the official Doctor Who site that Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, A Series of Unfortunate Events) is joining the long-running sci-fi series in a mystery role.
He’s currently filming scenes that’ll air for the show’s highly anticipated 60th-anniversary presentation slated for debut in 2023. Russell T Davies, who will retake the showrunner reins after Chris Chibnall‘s upcoming departure, had this to say regarding the actor’s role:
“It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor, beware!”

Davies and the BBC shared a photo of NPH on Instagram. He dons a gray wig, bifocals pushed down on the bridge of his nose, a burgundy-colored polka dot bow tie (bow ties are cool) and an apron with various tools in the pockets. Perhaps he’s an evil doctor of sorts?
Davies returns to the Doctor Who helm after over a decade away from the series. Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) will shoulder the Time Lord mantle as the Fourteenth Doctor after Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker‘s departure. Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper) will also join the show for its 60th-anniversary special. David Tennant and Catherine Tate will reprise their roles for said special too.
Whittaker will take a final bow in this fall’s Centenary Special, with Gatwa piloting the TARDIS in 2023.
The Davies 2.0 Era appears to be off to a cracking start. I’m excited to see how he reshapes the series.
Who do you think Neil Patrick Harris is playing? Will he be the Doctor’s greatest enemy? Sound off in the comments!
