Neil Gaiman’s THE WOLVES IN THE WALLS Gets the VR Treatment at Sundance

Virtual reality is the wave of the future, and it’s got a presence at the Sundance Film Festival this year.  The New Frontier section of the festival is presenting a VR adaptation of the Neil Gaiman children’s book The Wolves in the Walls.  Or, more precisely, the first chapter of that adaptation.

The immersive story “casts the viewer as the imaginary friend of 8-year-old Lucy, a sensible girl who hears noises coming from inside the walls — and is convinced it’s wolves.” This, according to Deadline.  It’s an animated experience, but you’re very much a part of it.  Lucy looks you in the eyes and brings you in to collude and collaborate.   The difference from other VR games and experiences being the storytelling element.  There’s an ‘intersection’ between the story and the game.  The focus is on the connection with Lucy… your relationship.  That’s so cool!

I don’t know about you, but being thrust into a book and having a character look right at me and take me into the action is an absolute dream come true.  I’m both thrilled and terrified by the possibility.  Like, would I ever be the same if I got to experience this?  Would I ever leave?…  Just me?  Okay, moving on.

The Wolves in the Walls is directed by Pete Billington.  The Sundance Film Festival is happening this week in Park City, Utah.
