We finally got a first look at the long awaited adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s The Sandman during Netflix’s TUDUM. Tom Sturridge stars in the original series as Morpheus, aka Dream, ruler of dreaming. Gaiman and Sturridge presented the first look at the capture of Dream. Oh and we have character posters too!
Based on the Gaiman’s graphic novel, The Sandman follows Morpheus who escapes imprisonment after 105 years. In 1912, occultist Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) was attempting to capture Death, but caught Dream instead. Now that he’s free, Dream must reclaim three totems of his power, pouch of sand, helm that looks like an elaborate gas mask, and a ruby to rebuild the Dreaming world. Kirby Howell-Baptiste stars as Death, Dream’s chic and easygoing sister. And Mason Alexander Park will play Desire.
The series is executive produced by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and showrunner Allan Heinberg. The graphic novel was first published by DC comics 32 years ago. When introducing the first look at the series, Gaiman said the “decades-long gestation” for the series was “a bit of a blessing,” allowing him to ensure the series was “true to the comics.”
“What astounded me through this process was how often it felt like I was walking around inside the comics. Everything from the sense to the costumes to the effects felt it had been plucked from my imagination.” – Neil Gaiman, TUDUM
A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.
The Sandman will debut on Netflix, soon …
