“Superheroes aren’t real — right?”
But what if they are? The CW released a short trailer for Naomi, its latest DC project from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. Naomi, the character, was created in 2019 by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell.
After a supernatural event involving Superman shakes her town to its core, Naomi McDuffie (Kaci Walfall) develops new abilities that make her question whether “superheroes” are the real deal. Amid her quest to seek answers, we see Akira (Stephanie March) and Zumbado (Cranston Johnson) conspire to take advantage of Naomi’s burgeoning powers.

Dee (Alexander Wraith) takes Naomi under his wing while she works to uncover the mystery behind it all and fend off the nefarious forces at play. Dee is more than just a tattoo parlor owner — he’s a winged alien hailing from the planet Thanagar, like Hawkman and Hawkgirl.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Walfall describes Dee as Naomi’s “Mr. Miyagi.” “He believes in her more than she can believe in herself. Although he doesn’t have all the answers, he teaches her more and more about how to control herself,” she adds.
By the trailer’s end, it looks like Naomi might confess the truth to her adoptive parents, Greg (Barry Watson) and Jennifer (Mouzam Makkar).
In the same EW interview, Blankenship teases the show’s cosmic elements relating to DC comics. “We are going deep. I’m confident DC fans will be pleasantly surprised with our cosmic cameos. Over the season, Naomi’s world expands in such a huge way,” she says.
Naomi stars Kaci Walfall, Barry Watson, Mouzam Makkar, Alexander Wraith, Stephanie March, Cranston Johnson, Mary-Charles Jones, Will Meyers and Aidan Gemme. Witness the truth unfold on a heroic scale when the show premieres on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, on The CW.
