The CW’s Naomi opens with a skateboard session while the parents watch and take pictures. Naomi (Kaci Walfall) chides her father, who attempts to use skateboard slang, and her mother expresses concern for Naomi’s safety. As the trio goes for churros at a food cart, they see Zumbado (Cranston Johnson) playing chess in the park. He locks eyes with Naomi, and Mr. McDuffie (Barry Watson) advises her to stay away from Zumbado because he’s dangerous.
As class president, Naomi and other students meet for a homecoming fundraiser check-in. The progress board reveals that the soccer team is in the lead. This information prompts Esme (Alie Urquhart) to insinuate that the team leads because Nathan (Daniel Puig) is Naomi’s boyfriend.
When Nathan disagrees, Anthony (Will Meyers) boasts that the Architecture club would win the fundraiser. Naomi reminds the group that the fundraiser is to raise money for the school.
Later, Annabelle (Mary-Charles Jones) speaks with the teacher who used to have her locker. The two have a comical back-and-forth about their different musical tastes. When she explains the exchange, Naomi muses about what it must be like to live in one place for your entire life. It spurs her curiosity about her planet — Earth-29.
Naomi reveals that the crystals, markings and Dilustel from the previous episode, along with Camp Counselor Jeff, were a dead end. Naomi concludes she needs to return to the “creepy mill” for more solutions with a reluctant Annabelle. The only person who can give her answers is Zumbado.
Naomi and Dee (Alexander Wraith) are training, giving her a goal of fluidity. He tells her they won’t be training for a few days as he has matters to handle involving Qyeala. Naomi questions the need to fight, but Dee advises that powers can be a crutch. They joke that one day she may be better than Superman.
Nathan enters their training space, and Dee goes into protector mode, giving Nathan a firm handshake and urging him to prioritize mental and emotional health. Naomi intervenes, leaving with Nathan. They talk about their experiences of staying in one place or moving around. They share a cute moment, with Naomi citing one of his perks for moving around a lot is meeting her.
Naomi and Annabelle visit the creepy mill. They notice that the markings from before are missing. Our titular heroine gains a new skill — seeing through walls. She discovers a secret room and a spaceship. The pair later conclude that this was Naomi’s spaceship, and she takes a piece with her. Naomi hopes that a physicist specializing in string theory can help her.
Back at school, Anthony sees his defaced homecoming display, and he blames Nathan. The two shove each other and get detention for their actions. In detention, they hash out some of their differences and reasons they have animosity towards each other. They find common ground, knowing what it’s like to feel their history is being erased, and vow to find out who defaced the display. The two find video footage, discovering that Esme trashed it.
Dee meets Adam (Chase Anderson) at a bar full of people from a different universe. Adam explains they come there when they get stranded. Adam tracks down a mercenary for him. Dee explains that he and Qyeala gave up the life of warriors. They couldn’t escape together, so they made a plan to meet, but Qyeala never made it.
Naomi poses as a college student to visit Dr. Bell (Jennifer Christa Palmer) to inquire about the piece of spaceship she found. Dr. Bell surmises the object isn’t from this earth, and neither is Naomi. The doctor admits that Naomi walked through a scanner at the door. The scanner is how she knows Naomi is an interdimensional species.
The doctor claims to have mutual friends with Superman and offers to help Naomi control her abilities. Naomi trusts her and asks her to use the object to help her find Earth-29.
Dr. Bell rules the location of Naomi’s home inconclusive, explaining that she’s from a different universe instead of a planet. The doctor agrees to help pinpoint this location, but someone stole her device. The security photo shows Zumbado has stolen it.
Dee and Adam meet with the mercenary Lux (Ahmed Lucan). When Lux refuses to give information on Qyeala, Dee resorts to violence once he notices a ring matching the one around his neck on Lux. Lux got it from Qyeala, but she’s dead. He explains the two of them were trapped when a conflict broke out, and she didn’t make it. Dee and Adam get into a bar fight with Lux and his companions, ending with Dee taking Qyeala’s ring and leaving.
Zumbado breaks into Greg and Jennifer McDuffie’s (Mouzam Makkar) home. He warns them they are in trouble if they stay in Port Oswego. He explains that the army’s investigations put them all in danger.
Zumbado confronts Naomi on her way home. He tells her she’s not ready for the truth, even if she thinks she knows what he has done to their planet. He advises her to stay away from S.T.A.R. Labs. Zumbado explains he took the device because it is dangerous, as is the doctor.
Naomi threatens to take the device from him, using her powers that he deflects with ease. His more powerful blast knocks her down. To add insult to injury, he calls her a disappointment before leaving.
When Naomi arrives home, her parents give her a scrapbook they started from their travels and her life. They want to remind her of good times.
Naomi returns to S.T.A.R. Labs for answers but finds that the doctor didn’t have plans to give her answers. Dr. Bell has plans to use Naomi as an energy source for her research. The device incapacitates Naomi. Zumbado intervenes, rescuing her from the doctor.
This episode brings more questions, but I love the focus on Anthony and Nathan. They always have tension in almost every episode, and I assumed it was about Naomi, but it goes much deeper, from the moment they met to a bad first impression and preconceived notions.
While we get the sense of Zumbado being a bad guy, he’s in the wings looking out for Naomi this time. However, it’s frustrating. I feel like I’m Naomi, screaming at him to tell us what he knows, but that wouldn’t make for good TV.
I enjoy the subtle show of power he exudes with the McDuffies, but we also see his regret at the end as he states he should have told her more.
The McDuffie parents will always have my heart because they show up and are present for their daughter. I’m enjoying learning about Dee and Qyeala, and I still hope he will reunite with her.
“Homecoming” leaves me with this burning question: Will Zumbado finally tell Naomi more about Earth-29?
