Variety announced today N.K. Jemisin‘s Great Cities duology is getting an adaptation, thanks to Walden Media. They intend to adapt The City We Became and The World We Make into a series. Read on to find out what we know so far!

Naia Cucukov, Walden Media’s executive VP of development and production, said “We couldn’t be more excited to take on N.K. Jemisin’s immersive, diverse and utterly enthralling tale about found family and the aching desire to be part of a community.” She went on to add “We’ve been huge fans of N.K.’s work for years, and we see this as a cornerstone project for Walden’s mission to work with transformative and inspirational voices in culture.” It sounds like the duology is in the perfect hands to adapt such an ambitious project.

The City We Became is a Lovecraftian urban fantasy novel first released in March 2020. It’s the story of the five boroughs of New York, each incarnated into a human avatar. They must set aside their differences if they are to unite against forces threatening New York – and the world. The City We Became won the British Fantasy Award and the Locus Award for best fantasy novel, and received nominations for the Hugo, Nebula and Ignyte best novel awards. The sequel, The World We Make, came out in November 2022 and continues the story of the New York avatars.

The Great Cities duology isn’t the only Jemisin adaptation in the works. Sony Pictures Entertainment and TriStar Pictures currently have the rights to adapt The Broken Earth trilogy as well. There isn’t any further information on either of these projects yet, but we’ll let you know when we learn more.
