Edward realizes he’s fallen in lust with Fitz. Granny explains the end game is to exterminate all the Veritys, and she is insane.

At the palace, Jane fires the incompetent and insulting Dr. Butts (Kevin Eldon). Leaving the room, Frances (Anna Chancellor) and Dudley follow, giving her advice and warning her that her Ethian agenda is alienating the nobles. Many have already left, and those who are left look to Norfolk.
Returning to the throne room, Jane announces there will be a tournament, and attendance is compulsory. Norfolk makes excuses to leave, but Jane insists he stays the week. She dismisses the court. Archer notes that the nobles won’t fight for her if she keeps supporting the Ethians. She suggests they let the nobles think they’ve won until Mary is dealt with.
Guildford’s Gone
She goes to the stables, where Rupert (Stewart Scudamore) tells her that Guildford has gone to look for an Ethian cure. Heartbroken, she seeks out Dudley to ask if he knows. He doesn’t, but he understands why Guildford went.
She accuses him of being a bad father. Dudley protests that he protected his son. He assures her that Guildford will return cured, and she can name him king with an easy conscience.

Meanwhile, William reads Katherine’s note and looks over at her. He gets up and walks towards her but then leaves the room without saying a word.
Not Good at Following Directions
Edward and Fitz sneak out, but Edward keeps trying to engage Fitz in conversation. Fitz gets the key for the main door and tells Edward to stay put. So, of course, Edward wanders down to a pantry. Luckily, Fitz gets loose and saves Edward from the nun.
Gloom
Jane is in a heartbroken depression. At the same time, a violent thunderstorm means the tournament must be called off.
She refuses to cancel the festivities and sets up a bowling game in one hall. During a lull in play, she convinces Archer and Norfolk to play together. They refuse to partner but are willing to compete. Norfolk proposes wagering the future of Division Laws on the game. Archer accepts.

Frances catches them and sends William off. She scolds Katherine for taking up with the son of Lord Seymour and forbids her from continuing to see him.
The match between Norfolk and Archer begins. The game is close, and Norfolk asks how Archer plays so well. Archer explains he’s played all his life. Norfolk points out that commoners were outlawed from playing the game, and Archer points out that he is the son of a baron who everyone knew.
Change Is in the Air
Despite Norfolk using some technicalities, Archer outbowls him, and Norfolk loses, which means Division Laws will be abolished. Frustrated, he throws his ball, hitting Stan in the face and breaking his nose. Jane sees to the hit, and Stan talks with her about Guildford.
He explains that his brother’s on a quest. When Jane presses him on it, he nearly shares something he shouldn’t and catches himself saying Guildford’s trying to forgive himself. Jane asks him to explain. Stan tells her to ask Guildford when he comes back.

Admitting he’s Ethian, he begs the woodcutter to strike off the shackle around his neck. The woodcutter cuts off the lock. Guildford thanks him, transforms, and runs home.
