Welcome to Tavern Talk Thursday! We are expanding! What started as a column dedicated to chatting with members of the TTRPG community is growing to talk about all things TTRPG and board games. We aim to continue sharing everything we love about the community and all the content within. So, consider this a little peek into our favorite worlds and creators as we explore everything we love.
As we settle into the new year and prioritize protecting our peace, something that we want to enjoy more is reading. It’s a way for us to lose ourselves in another world. And what better way than in one that reminds us of TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons or our favorite fantasy video games? So whether you are looking for an easy rom-com read or to traverse through an adventure of a lifetime, we have something everyone can enjoy.

Dungeons and Drama
Kicking off our must-read list is a young adult rom-com from Kristy Boyce. We have talked about our love for Dungeons and Drama before, and for good reason. It walks the balance of including elements of Dungeons and Dragons without being a fantasy book. It’s an easy read for those who love rom-com books but want elements of their favorite TTRPGs. We also love all of the musical theater references. If you have already read this book, we highly suggest checking out Boyce’s other novel, Dating and Dragons.
Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
When it comes to novels that remind us of our favorite TTRPGs, we can’t help but gush over the World of Warcraft novels. Our favorite is Christie Golden’s Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. One of the greatest antagonists within the Warcraft universe has a dark backstory that Golden spins in a beautiful web. It contains quite a lot of spoilers for the franchise, so new readers and players should beware. But for those already in love with the world’s lore, this gives an incredible look at one of their most iconic characters. And if you love Warcraft, we suggest checking out the long list of novels to uncover even more.

Runescape: The Fall of Hallowvale
Our next mist-read book is Robbie MacNiven’s Runescape: The Fall of Hallowvale. We couldn’t put down this most recent installment to the Runescape book universe. For fans of the video game, MacNiven does the setting justice as he builds this incredible story. The lore fits nicely into the God Wars storyline and expands in a way that feels authentic. It’s packed with fantasy elements, lore drops and a sense of adventure. Quite a few novels take place within the Runescape universe, and they all fill our need for adventure.
Legend of Drizzt Series
Our final novel on Tavern Talk Thursday’s must-read list is actually an entire series. One of the most iconic Dungeons and Dragons characters, besides one’s player character, is R.A Salvatore’s Drizzt. He has gone on incredible adventures in places players have traversed. Reading of his adventures through Icewind Dale or Neverwinter feels like a warm hug. While we suggest reading through it in order, reading about his adventures in your favorite area is a great way to spend your time. In fact, reading about where your game is currently taking place is exciting, and you can see it through others’ eyes.
