MURDERVILLE Recap: (S01E02) Triplet Homicide

Updated on:

Marshawn Lynch in of Murderville.

CAUTION: This recap of Murderville has more spoilers than a cold case. So grab your look-out kit and blood spatter analyzer, but only if you’re ready to crack this case as fast as Greendale’s Officer Warburton can hack into a private email account. Yes? Let’s get this Fart-mitzvah started!

Each episode begins with a cold open based on the BAFTA award-winning BBC3 series Murder in Successville by Tiger Aspect Productions and Shiny Button Productions. Meet Senior Detective Terry Seattle (Will Arnett), Homicide Division, and he’s killing it. Or, at least, he thinks he is. His ex-wife, Chief Rhonda (Haneefah Wood), probably disagrees, but at least she’s around to keep him in line and assign him a new partner about as often as he loses his gun.

For Seattle, not only is his life falling apart, but every day means a new murder case and a new celebrity guest star as his partner.

Triplet Homicide

In Episode 2, “Triplet Homicide,” Seattle meets his second partner, football star Marshawn “The Beast” Lynch. But here’s Murderville’s catch, Marshawn isn’t given a script and has no idea what’s about to happen to him. Together, for the next 30 minutes, Marshawn and Seattle improvise their way through the case, but it’s ultimately up to Marshawn to name the killer.

The episode opens with a Homicide Decetive’s Log telling the viewer death is a normal part of the job. But that doesn’t make it any easier when someone close to you dies. Even if the person is your great aunt and she died in 2009. To make matters worse, we learn from Chief Rhonda the urn was only lost because Seattle totaled his Camero trying to Tokoyo drift.

Interrupting the conversation about Aunt Viv, Chief Rhonda calls Marshawn’s name so that he can come out to meet Seattle, who immediately hands his new partner the urn as the two men walk into the Detective’s office.

Evidence Gathering

Now in Seattle’s office, the disgruntled detective begins to grill Marshawn about why he wants to be a homicide detective—and more importantly, to grill The Beast on whether he thinks he’ll be any good at it. But first, Marshawn has a question. Can he change his name to Det. Bagabitch?

Seattle calls Carol down at City Hall. It’s not a problem.

As Det. Seattle and Det. Trainee Bagabitch practice avenging speeches to Aunt Viv; Chief Rhonda comes in to say there’s been a murder: an 84-year-old woman has been bludgeoned to death in her mansion.

But before they can leave, Seattle must finish Marshawn’s homicide detective training. He asks The Beast how much investigative field training he’s had? “Training Day,” the footballer responds. “Perfect,” says Seattle, and the two are on their way to the crime scene. “King Kong ain’t got nothing on me!”

Next up, the two detectives head over to the Coroner’s Officer, staffed by the all-purpose CSI Amber Kang (Lilan Bowden). Kang has high hopes for the pair (you know because they’re both somewhat cool). However, she does have a surprise in store for Marshawn and some clues too!

CSI Kang offers the first evidence to help the homicide trainee solve the mystery. She tells them someone murdered the older woman by bludgeoning her (hard!) in the right temple with Tommy Tuxedo. Kang also says that Tommy Tuxedo, aka Chucky in a Top Hat, is modeled after the old women’s triplet sons. Furthermore, based on how the woman fell, she faced her killer, making the killer left-handed!

The murderer also left some clues that weren’t on the body. Crime scene investigators also discover that the murderer spray-painted, “How much do you love him, mom?” If that isn’t enough to convince you it was the sons, there is security footage of one of them leaving in a black hoodie.

The Interrogation(s)

Back at the police station, the homicide detectives have hauled the first brother in for questioning. Charles Worthington (Rob Huebel), the one who looks like the other two. As Seattle says in his internal dialogue, “Charles stood to gain big time now that she was retired… from being alive.”

However, the interrogation room is missing its observation window. Seattle devises a plan: whatever Charles does, Marshawn will mirror it. But then, another cop walks in, and to keep the charade going: whatever the cop does, Seattle will reproduce it.

Eventually, the two detectives hop into the interrogation room to interview Mr. Frat Boy 2004, Charles Edition (comes with two additional popped-collar Polo shirts). Charles tells them that his mother, Cora, was a mean old woman. Everybody hated her. Quickly, the interrogation devolves into a product redesign meeting for Tommy Tuxedo, who they redesign into space pimp Tommy, with a Harlem Nights throwback.

Finished with their first suspect, Seattle and Marshawn head to their next stop, 200 feet underground in Chester Worthington’s bunker. Chester previously renounced his family and became a doomsday prepper. Now, he lives in a bunker on his mother’s property and never leaves unless… he needs supplies… or a Wetzel’s Pretzel… or he gets really bored.

Chester agrees to answer some of their questions on one condition, Marshawn agrees to pose for the front of the C-Buck, that’s the Chester dollar and the only accepted currency in Chester World. Yes, it’s Chester’s world, and Seattle and Lynch are only living in it.

As Marshawn poses on the couch, he asks Chester questions about his relationship with his mother. The second brother responds by saying, “To be honest, there was no relationship. Mom and my brothers took their eyes off the big picture that the world is ending,” pretty much-explaining family dynamics in a pandemic world.

Next up is the final interrogation. Chadd, the middle triplet, stays at an elite Old Hollywood hotel based on the infamous Chateau Marmont. The hotel is known for its celebrity scandals, the most notorious being John Belushi‘s 1982 drug death and Lindsay Lohan‘s extended stay at the hotel before she got clean. And now, Chadd, a failed influencer gambling away his family’s money.

As usual, Seattle sends his trainee undercover: this time, Marshawn will be a dealer in Chadd’s weekly blackjack game. Seattle tells Marshawn it will be okay; he’s a smart guy (and to be honest, he’s one of the best guests on the series). Having spent some of my early 20s at the Chateau, the following scene is so LA, it makes my heart melt in its absurdity (and in calling out some of the most over-the-top parts of that scene).

And things are going okay for the undercover trainee until Seattle crashes the game, and let’s slip that he knows the undercover dealer, Octavius Shitwagon, aka Marshawn.

The Accusation

Back at Cora’s mansion, Marshawn is ready to use the evidence to guess who the real murderer is. “One of the Worthington Triplets is about to inherit life in prison,” says Seattle.

Marshawn has cracked the case, and it’s Charles. His reasoning: (1) he saw him leave Cora’s with the same damn black hoodie he’s wearing at the accusation proceedings, and (2) he can’t spell for sh*t. Based on these two pieces of evidence, Marshawn decides to put all of his eggs in one basket and declare Charles the killer.

Chief Rhonda adjusts her pants and says, “Marshawn Lynch, you are 100% incorrect.”

Chief Rhonda adds that Charles doesn’t fit the killer’s profile because he’s not left-handed, and he calls his mother “Cora.” Instead, Chester was the killer! He’s the only triplet who is left-handed (which you see when he swings the bat) and who calls Cora “Mom,” although he cleverly hid his black sweatshirt before Marshawn sat down to pose for the one million “doller” Chester buck.

“Bro,” says his brother as Marshawn gets fired by Chief Rhonda. Seattle turns to his trainee and tells him that he is one of the best partners ever had.
