Stuck in the Middle With Murderbot
It’s rogue. It’s powerful. More importantly, it would rather be watching TV.
Apple TV+ unleashed the official trailer for Murderbot, its adaptation of Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning series, The Murderbot Diaries. Alexander Skarsgård gets futuristic as the titular robot who strays from the norm by acquiring free will.

Here’s a synopsis of the 10-episode series per Apple:
“Murderbot is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.”
The Cast and Crew
In addition to Skarsgård, the ensemble cast includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones and Tamara Podemski. The show hails from Oscar nominees Chris and Paul Weitz, who garnered nominations for writing the screenplay for 2002’s About a Boy. The Weitz brothers wrote, directed and produced the series, with Wells serving as a consulting producer and David S. Goyer, Andrew Miano, Keith Levine and Skarsgård on board as executive producers.

Watch the Trailer
The trailer deftly balances humor, science fiction and thriller elements, complete with sleek visuals and delightful guest appearances from Anna Konkle, Clark Gregg, Jack McBrayer and John Cho. Gregg, McBrayer and Cho pop up in footage from Murderbot’s favorite comfort show, The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. Skarsgård is an underrated comedic performer (Succession, anyone?), so I’m excited to see him flex his funny muscles here.
Murderbot premieres on May 16, 2025, with its first two episodes on Apple TV+. New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays through July 11. Before you go, check out the official trailer below.
