What happens when you mix in a pinch of murder, a dash of intrigue and a smattering of fate? You get The Luminaries, a new period drama for Starz. An official trailer for the series dropped on Tuesday.
Now, the show is an adaptation of the 2013 Eleanor Catton novel of the same name. Said novel was a recipient of the Man Booker Prize. The Luminaries focuses on New Zealand in 1866. A gold rush has enveloped a mining community therein. We’re invited to follow various threads of one story. There’s a prostitute named Anna Wetherell who’s accused of homicide (Eve Hewson), a missing wealthy man called Emery Staines (Himesh Patel) and Lydia Wells (Eva Green), a widow who claims an overabundance of gold. Oh, and Lydia dabbles in the occult.
Entertainment Weekly released a review of Catton’s book back in 2013. Here’s a snippet from the review:
Set in a New Zealand gold-mining town in 1866, this epic yarn about a motley crew of 12 men and their attempts to solve a series of local mysteries reads like an actual Victorian novel. Not a high-minded one destined to be taught in schools, but a genuinely pleasurable romp meant to absorb you for days and days.

Green is best known for her Golden Globe-nominated work in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. Hewson recently starred in Tesla opposite Ethan Hawke. Patel took center stage in the 2019 musical charmer Yesterday. It’s about a struggling musician who’s the only one who remembers The Beatles in an alternative timeline where they never existed.
The Luminaries trailer delves into this mystical realm wherein nothing is as it seems. What more could you ask from a supernatural period drama? The scenery and costumes are dazzling. Plus, I’ll follow Eva Green to the ends of the Earth. Her performance in Penny Dreadful was nothing short of mesmerizing. A masterclass in acting.
