Jujutsu Kaisen 0

There hasn’t been a lot of recent anime that have caught my eye quite like Jujutsu Kaisen has over the last few years. The series focuses on a group of students who can control the flow of Cursed Energy in their bodies in order to fight against other curses. The series has been highly acclaimed and well received by the community both in the States and overseas. So, it was a no-brainer that when Crunchyroll and director Sunghoo Park‘s Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was announced, I knew I needed to check it out. The film takes place before the events of the animated series and gives us a look at a story that has been touched upon within episodes. But how does it measure up? Keep reading to find out!

As with any movie that takes place outside of a show’s episodes, I was worried about how it would stand up to the series. Thankfully, early trailers let us know that this story takes place before the show begins and focuses on second-year students Yuta, Maki, Toge and Panda. Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s plot isn’t something that was made up for a movie but instead pulls straight from the prequel manga. This means that all of the weird continuity errors that might generally arise have already been thought through.

But just because it is cannon to the series doesn’t mean it will match up well. However, the movie understood the assignment and it falls right in line. It helps that the characters within Jujutsu Kaisen 0 don’t feel out of place in this story. Their interactions, reactions and choices feel true to how their character would conduct themselves in the series. Plus, this story ties into the current show, which leads to some fun easter eggs and offers some insight into current plotlines.

Another thing that helps Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the animation style. The movie relies heavily on its epic fight scenes and the animation allows them to flow beautifully. It also doesn’t shy away from the more gruesome views we have come to know from the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. When you are face to face with these cursed monsters, you will be treated to some pretty terrifying and intense design choices. And honestly, could we ask for anything better?

I was fortunate enough to get the chance to watch both the sub and dub version of Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Both are strong contenders and the voice actors for each bring a level of performance they can be proud of. But if you don’t have a preference between the two, I suggest checking out the sub, as sometimes things might be a bit lost in translation. And I highly recommend paying attention to all the backstory and minor details because you aren’t going to want to miss anything from beginning to end.

Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a must-watch for every fan of the series and those looking to dive into it. You don’t have to have a heavy knowledge of the franchise to enjoy the film. In fact, it can serve as a nice intro into what one might expect to find within the series. I can’t imagine a better way to enjoy this film than to check it out on the big screen. It will hit United States theaters starting March 18, 2022. Check out the final trailer down below to prepare yourself for all the action!
