Mortal Kombat fans, our time has come. The first trailer for Simon McQuoid‘s adaptation of the highly popular video game franchise is here! And guys, let me tell you that it is everything we need. Gritty fight scenes, blood baths and iconic phrases send chills down your spine. Just hearing Hiroyuki Sanada speak the words “get over here”. Chills. Literal chills.
The Mortal Kombat trailer opens with Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) recounting a mission in Brazil where she came face to face with Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim). In this flashback, we watch him use his ability to control ice to rip the arms off of Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks). Back in the present-day, we learn that Sub-Zero is after Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who has been marked with the “invitation” to the Mortal Kombat tournament between Earthrealm’s mightiest champions and opponents from Outworld.

We also get a chance to see Scorpion’s (Sanada) “birth”. Just before the trailer, Entertainment Weekly dropped an exclusive image of the character and some information for McQuoid. He shared that Mortal Kombat will focus partly on Scorpion’s character development. The trailer shows him in the feudal era facing off against Bi-Han’s enemies (Taslim prior to becoming Sub-Zero). We watch as he takes up the iconic kunai blade that he has fashioned into a whip and wreaks havoc on his assailants.
The rest of the Mortal Kombat trailer then moves into a roll call packed with every character iconic from the franchise. We saw Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), who is guiding the Earthrealm’s champions against Shang Tsung’s (Chin Han) fighters. Sonya, Cole and Jax are joined by Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kano (Josh Lawson) and Kung Lao (Max Huang). In one of my favorite moments from the trailer, we get the chance to see Sisi Stringer‘s Mileena lick the blood of her victim off her ninja sias. In the final moments, we even get a chance to see Goro and Kano in a battle against Reptile.
I have been in complete awe from beginning to end. The original franchise has a special place in my heart, but it was far from perfect compared to the source material. But this? This Mortal Kombat trailer has nearly everything I needed. It is dark, gritty, bloody and action-packed. My only hope is that the entire film is as impressive as this trailer was. I have high hopes for you, Warner Bros. I’ve got my eye on you.
Mortal Kombat will strike into theaters on April 16, 2021. It will also be available on HBO Max for 30 days on release. Check out the trailer and first-look image of Scorpion below! Are you just as excited as me? Sound off in the comments below and on social media!
