We got some exciting news today surrounding the Mortal Kombat franchise from Deadline. New Line has announced that they are working on a sequel to the intense action fighting film with writer Jeremy Slater. The film is based on the video game franchise of the same name and same a few film adaptations in the 90s. While I loved the reboot that came out last year, it did have its flaws. But, I am excited to see that New Line is willing to step back into the ring and give us a sequel.
Other than Slater penning the second Mortal Kombat, we know nothing else. However, I have a feeling it will deal heavily with Shang Tsung’s (Chin Han) revenge against Raidan (Tadanobu Asano) and his fighters. I hope that we will get the chance to see Cole Young (Lewis Tan) rejoin the others as they prepare for the next tournament. The team could also expand on the first film and introduce more characters from the video game franchise. Since the first film didn’t include a traditional tournament, I hope the second one will.
Mortal Kombat would be nothing without a tournament and fighting and gore. And the first film proved that they aren’t afraid to kick the action and gore up a few notches. The film featured some of my favorite choreographed fight scenes in cinema. I can only hope that they are going to outdo themselves moving forward. Maybe a few iconic fights between characters or introduce fights in environments players know and love. But, it looks like we still have quite a bit of time before we get any new information.
If you haven’t seen the first Mortal Kombat, we highly suggest checking it out! Are you excited to see the film getting a sequel? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
